image-assetNetflix’s documentary series The Toys That Made Us is basically the ultimate nostalgia trip for kids from the ’80s and ’90s. The first two seasons offered a pleasurable look back at some of the defining toy lines of decades past and the often rocky road those franchises took from conception to ultimately arriving on the shelves. Season 3 does very little to break the mold, but it does prove there’s still plenty of life left in this formula. With the first two seasons having exhausted most of the more obvious choices of toy lines (Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Barbie, etc.) Season 3 is able to dig a little deeper and explore some less predictable candidates. There’s really only one gaping hole being filled in this batch (that being Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), with the other three episodes venturing down a slightly more esoteric path (My Little Pony, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and pro-wrestling figures).
MV5BMTI4MDY4NzgyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMzkzNDA3._V1_By now, viewers should know exactly what to expect from the series. Each episode traces the rise of a major toy empire, and, following its creation, the initial hurdles in bringing those toys to market and the meteoric rise and eventual fall of a commercial juggernaut. Along the way, the series features interviews with many of the executives and toy designers involved in the process, along with a handful of actors from the relevant tie-in TV shows. The greatest strength of The Toys That Made Us is how it makes these stories so digestible and entertaining. To borrow a term often used in the series, the subject matter isn’t necessarily that “toyetic.” Talking heads and static images of outdated plastic action figures don’t make for a very dynamic series. While there is archival footage of classic toy commercials and news broadcasts, most of that tends to be of very poor quality.MLM8sogiTtZgz9KCad4bWMBut the series makes the most of that limited material. The rapid-fire editing and the strong sense of humor help punch up what otherwise could be very dry retrospectives on old toys. The series frequently cuts between one interviewee and another, creating a silly sort of banter as competing historical accounts come into conflict. As we’ve seen in past episodes like the Masters of the Universe installment, there’s often sharp disagreement as to who truly deserves to be credited with the creation of these characters. This season has a lot of fun with those disagreements. It also frequently slips in amusing callbacks to past episodes, as we’re starting to see stories intertwine and familiar faces pop up more and more.MV5BMjAxODAxOTczNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTgyMzU0NQ@@._V1_SX1500_CR0,0,1500,999_AL_Again, the worst that can be said for Season 3 is that it does very little to break out of the mold established in earlier episodes. The stories being told tend to follow a very familiar trajectory. Most episodes focus a majority of their time on the creation phase and the blockbuster sellout phase, leaving little room to really explore the sad decline of these toy lines or the efforts to regroup and reboot them for modern audiences. That’s especially frustrating in the My Little Pony episode. While it does explore the genesis of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the fascinating “Brony” phenomenon, there’s only so much room left by the time the episode reaches that point. Very rarely does a Netflix series leave me wishing the episode run-times were longer, but this is a rare exception.MV5BMTYzNTg0NDQ3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjYyMzU0NQ@@._V1_SX1500_CR0,0,1500,999_AL_The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode may well be the biggest example yet of the series trying to cram too much material into a 40-ish minute documentary. It’s an engrossing episode, to be sure, especially given how heavily TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are involved. Anyone even mildly interested in that particular franchise will surely get a kick out of learning the humble origins of that franchise and seeing Eastman and Laird mend fences on-camera after growing apart in the early ’00s. That said, there’s just so much ground to cover here in terms of the origin of the Turtles, the Turtle Mania phenomenon, and the various efforts to reinvigorate the franchise over the years. TMNT could have easily filled an entire four-episode season on its own, and it’s almost a shame creator Brian Volk-Weiss didn’t go in that direction. Dedicated seasons may still be an angle worth considering down the line, especially as the series slowly exhausts the A-List names.Toys-that-made-us-season-3-10Power Rangers fans may find that particular episode slightly frustrating in that it tends to downplay the toys themselves in favor of the TV series. But to its credit, that episode seems to recognize where the truly interesting story is to be found. Unlike many of these properties, the Power Rangers toys are an extension of the TV series, not the other way around. And it’s quite the journey learning about the long, uphill battle in convincing American TV networks to air a show full of dubbed Japanese sentai scenes and outlandish robots. The wrestling episode is the one Season 3 installment which does manage to veer off the beaten path somewhat. That may simply be because the story behind those toys is less straightforward and harder to squeeze into that standard “rise and fall and return” formula. It’s a complicated web of competing toy manufacturers and rival pro wrestling leagues, creating a saga of success and betrayal and heartbreak that winds up evoking the theatrical melodrama of wrestling itself.00.-TMNTThe Toys That Made Us continues to be a must-watch for anyone who hoarded action figures or dolls as a child and wants to relive that childhood fun. Season 3 sheds light on four more major properties and their respective rises and falls. Only one of these episodes does much to venture outside the series’ carefully honed formula, and the relatively short length can sometimes be constraining. Still, the series manages to celebrate these childhood favorites with wit and energy.

James Corden, Anna Faris, and T.J. Miller in The Emoji Movie (2017)Gene is an emoji that lives in Textopolis, a digital city inside the phone of his user Alex. He is the son of two meh emojis named Mel and Mary, and is able to make multiple expressions despite his parents’ upbringing. His parents are hesitant of him going to work, but Gene insists so that he can feel useful. Upon receiving a text from his crush Addie, Alex decides to send her an emoji. When Gene is selected, he panics, makes a panicked expression, and wrecks the text center. Gene is called in by Smiler, a smiley emoji and leader of the text center, who concludes that Gene is a “malfunction” and therefore must be deleted. Gene is chased by bots, but is rescued by Hi-5, a once popular emoji who has since lost his fame due to lack of use. He tells Gene that he can be fixed if they find a hacker, and Hi-5 accompanies him so that he can reclaim his fame.T.J. Miller in The Emoji Movie (2017)Smiler sends more bots to look for Gene when she finds out that he has left Textopolis, as his actions have caused Alex to think that his phone needs to be fixed. Gene and Hi-5 come to a piracy app where they meet a hacker emoji named Jailbreak, who wants to reach Dropbox so that she can live in the cloud. The trio is attacked by Smiler’s bots, but manage to escape into the game Candy Crush. Jailbreak reveals that Gene can be fixed in the cloud, and the group goes off into the Just Dance app. While there, Jailbreak is revealed to be a princess emoji who fled home after tiring of being stereotyped. They are once again attacked by bots, and their actions cause Alex to delete the Just Dance app. Gene and Jailbreak escape, but Hi-5 is taken along with the app and ends up in the trash.Patrick Stewart, James Corden, Anna Faris, and T.J. Miller in The Emoji Movie (2017)Mel and Mary go searching for Gene and have a very lethargic argument. They make up in the Instagram app when Mel reveals that he, too, is a malfunction, explaining Gene’s behavior. While traveling through Spotify, Jailbreak admits that she likes Gene just the way he is, and that he should not be ashamed of his malfunction. The two start to fall in love and Gene silently debates his choice to change himself. They make it to the trash and rescue Hi-5, but are soon attacked by a bot upgraded with illegal malware. They evade it by entangling its arms and enter Dropbox, where they encounter a firewall. After many tries, the gang get past it with a password being Addie’s name and make it to the cloud, where Jailbreak prepares to reprogram Gene. Gene admits his feelings for Jailbreak, but she wishes to stick to her plan of venturing into the cloud, unintentionally causing Gene to revert to his apathetic programming out of heartbreak. Suddenly, the upgraded bot sneaks into the cloud and captures Gene, prompting Hi-5 and Jailbreak to go after him with a Twitter bird summoned by Jailbreak in her princess form.T.J. Miller and Jude Kouyate in The Emoji Movie (2017)As Smiler prepares to delete Gene, Mel and Mary arrive. Mel reveals to everyone that he is also a malfunction, prompting Smiler to threaten deleting him as well. Jailbreak and Hi-5 arrive and disable the bot, which falls on top of Smiler. Alex has since taken his phone to a store in hopes that a factory reset performed by technical support would restore his phone’s functionality, which would entail total destruction of Gene’s world should such operation complete. Out of desperation, Gene prepares to have himself texted to Addie, making numerous faces to express himself. Realizing that Addie received a text from him, Alex cancels the factory reset just as it nearly finishes, saving the emoji and finally getting to speak with Addie, who likes the emoji Alex sent. Gene accepts himself for who he is and is celebrated by all of the emojis. In a mid-credits scene, Smiler has been relegated to the “loser lounge” with the other unused and forgotten emojis for her crimes, wearing numerous braces due to her teeth being cracked by the bot, and playing and losing a game of Go Fish.Anna Faris and T.J. Miller in The Emoji Movie (2017)I know it’s really fun to bash this movie, but speaking honestly, I have to say this movie was okay. The story is predictable, the twist was not surprising, the romance between Gene and Jailbreak felt forced, and I didn’t care for the humans, but the story at least had structure and competency, and was consistent. The majority of the humor is weak and immature, especially with the Poop Emoji. Some of the gags managed to make me chuckle, not laugh but I did find enjoyment. The animation is good, it’s colorful and energetic, and there are some creative scenes, even with the product placement scenes. However the designs of the Emojis are really, really simplistic and some are even creepy. The characters are not interesting. Gene is the same old “I wan’t to fit in” character, and the other characters are also the same old tropes as well. The characters also have their developments presented in the most generic way possible. The characters that stand out for me is the villain and Gene’s parents. Mostly because they supply the best comedy and the villain has an this crazy personality that kept me active. The Emoji Movie is a meh film that’s suited to entertain kids.

A fun episode, plus the Sabrina references were funny to anyone who had watched that show.

This was excellent reunion for Melissa Joan Hart and Beth Broderick, plus the numerous Sabrina references were great, the whole was is it real or was it  a dream thing is funny as it lets the audience decide which is which.

Mel Brooks, Fran Drescher, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Keegan-Michael Key, and Selena Gomez in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)In 1897, Dracula and his friends travel in disguise on a train to Budapest. Professor Abraham Van Helsing, Dracula’s arch-enemy, boards the train and unveils the monsters; the monsters escape by climbing through the roof, and Dracula pushes his friends from the train for their safety. Van Helsing is obsessed with destroying Dracula but is constantly outsmarted by him.Adam Sandler, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, and Asher Blinkoff in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)In the present day, Dracula is running his hotel business smoothly, with his daughter Mavis and son-in-law Johnny. Drac is depressed that he has remained single since his wife Martha’s death despite his attempts to meet someone. Misinterpreting this as stress from overwork, Mavis books a cruise so they can all take a break and spend more time together as a family. Dracula, Mavis, Johnny, Dennis, Vlad, and the hotel guests board a cruise ship called the Legacy. Dracula sees the ship’s human captain, Ericka, and immediately falls for her, something that he thought was impossible as he had already “zinged” before.Steve Buscemi, Fran Drescher, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Genndy Tartakovsky, Keegan-Michael Key, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)Ericka goes to a secret room on the lower decks where she meets Abraham Van Helsing, who is revealed to be her great-grandfather and is almost completely mechanised, to avoid death. Van Helsing has a plan to eliminate all the monsters, in the cruise upon its arrival at the lost city of Atlantis using an Instrument of Destruction, which could be found in Atlantis’ ruins. Van Helsing makes Ericka promise to not assassinate Dracula beforehand, but she makes repeated unsuccessful attempts. Dracula’s friends hear Ericka complain about her inability get him and misinterpret this as a sign of affection. Dracula nervously asks Ericka out on a date, and she accepts since she sees this as another chance to kill him. As they dine on a deserted island, Ericka unexpectedly begins to fall in love with Drac, after they learn about each other’s pasts.Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)Mavis discovers Dracula is interested in Ericka and becomes suspicious of Ericka’s motives. The cruise ship reaches Atlantis, which has been converted into a casino; Dracula decides to tell Mavis the truth about Ericka but gets distracted seeing Ericka enter an underground crypt. Drac follows her, with Mavis not far behind, and learns that Ericka is after a “family heirloom”. With Dracula’s help, she evades the booby traps around the object and escapes. Mavis arrives and confronts them, and Dracula confesses that he “zinged” with Ericka, to Mavis’ surprise and confusion. After Ericka is told what a “zing” is, she harshly rejects Dracula’s romantic feelings, leaving Dracula heartbroken.Steve Buscemi, Fran Drescher, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Genndy Tartakovsky, Keegan-Michael Key, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, and Asher Blinkoff in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)A regretful Ericka gives Van Helsing the object – revealed to be the Instrument of Destruction – and he sets a trap for the monsters at a dance party. Noticing that Dracula is still upset, Mavis, after some advice from Johnny, tells her father to talk to Ericka, admitting that she was afraid of him leaving her, which fear Drac allays. Van Helsing shows up and pushes away the DJ, and a saddened Ericka is forced to reveal that she is his great-granddaughter. Van Helsing unveils the Instrument of Destruction, a case for a music note sheet, and plays a song that drives a friendly Kraken living near the island to attack the monsters. Ericka saves Dracula from the Kraken and pleads with her great-grandfather to stop the destruction, confessing her love for Drac. This infuriates Van Helsing, and he attacks them both.Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, and Asher Blinkoff in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)To pacify the Kraken, Johnny opens up a portable DJ kit and plays positive songs to beat Van Helsing’s song. Upon playing the Macarena, the Kraken is relaxed and happy for good; Van Helsing is unable to counter the song as everyone begins to dance, including the music sheet. When Van Helsing also dances, he accidentally slips and falls, but Dracula saves him. Touched by this act of kindness, Van Helsing apologizes to the monsters and gives everyone a full refund for the cruise, before sending them back. Back at Hotel Transylvania, Dracula proposes to Ericka, who stammers at the question before agreeing.Steve Buscemi, Mel Brooks, Fran Drescher, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Genndy Tartakovsky, Keegan-Michael Key, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)Hotel Transylvania 3 was still a pretty good sequel with a weak but still funny story, top notch animation and some mostly pretty good characters. Even though I do think the second movie was the best in the series, I still think this was a pretty good movie and I definitely have plans of watching it in the future.

When Gentleman Ghost attempts to possess Raven to escape, he cracks her gem, which unleashes some of her inner demonic power and results in his defeat. Trigon reveals that Raven’s demonic half is slowly taking over her and offers to take it away, but she refuses to give it to him.71e8zk6t4LL._SL1500_Suddenly, the Titans are abducted by the Master of Games, a being who explores the multiverse with his Worlogog to find the best versions of particular heroes. He pits the 2013 Titans against the original 2003 animated Titans, who agree to fight after the Master of Games threatens to destroy their Earth. 2003 Robin and Cyborg manage to take out all of the 2013 Titans with the exception of Raven. She is coerced into unleashing her demonic power against the 2003 Raven, who snaps her out of it when she realizes the Master of Games is siphoning her demonic energy. The Master of Games reveals himself to be 2013 Trigon, who uses Raven’s energy to resurrect 2003 Trigon. The two Trigons kidnap the Ravens and escape to the 2003 Earth to finish absorbing 2013 Raven’s powers so they can conquer the multiverse.10519267_743169505741924_3711826686541512601_nThe two Titans teams agree to work together to stop the Trigons and rescue their Ravens. 2003 Robin deduces that the Trigons are using a Worlogog from their Earth to travel between dimensions, so they need a Worlogog from the 2013 dimension, which the 2013 Titans realize belongs to Santa Claus. The two teams battle Santa and Mrs. Claus and escape by using the device to travel between dimensions and eventually make it to the 2003 Earth just after 2003 Trigon completely absorbs 2013 Raven’s powers. Fed up with his counterpart’s insults, 2013 Trigon consumes 2003 Trigon and transforms into a new powerful being named Hexagon.41992199_1955607841164745_1867220934398574592_nTo combat this new threat, 2003 Robin uses their Worlogog to summon Titans teams throughout the multiverse to form the “Titans of Infinite Earths”. However, Hexagon proves to be too powerful. 2013 Raven evens the odds by absorbing all of her counterparts and transforms into a dragon known as “The Unkindness”. The Titans destroy Trigon’s Worlogog and assist Raven in getting her powers back, which sends 2003 Trigon into limbo while 2013 Robin uses their Worlogog to send 2013 Trigon to a zombie dimension. After 2013 Raven accepts her demonic half, all of the Titans are sent home to their respective dimensions. Upon returning to their Earth, the 2013 Titans are glad that they don’t have to endure another multiverse-threatening crossover for at least another year, but they are attacked shortly afterwards by Darkseid, whom they refuse to battle out of exhaustion.71643117_10221170888807609_75716815979806720_nOverall, I recommend this movie to everyone.
