Parker Posey and Dominic Purcell in Blade: Trinity (2004)Vampires investigate an ancient tomb in the Syrian Desert, which they believe belongs to Dracula, the first vampire. To keep Blade from interfering, they frame him for the murder of a human familiar. FBI agents subsequently locate Blade’s hideout and kill his mentor and friend, Abraham Whistler. Demoralized, Blade surrenders and is arrested.Wesley Snipes in Blade: Trinity (2004)The vampires’ familiars have arranged for the authorities to turn Blade over to them. He is rescued by Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler, Abraham’s daughter, who invite Blade to join their band of vampire hunters, the Nightstalkers. From them, Blade learns that Danica Talos, an old enemy of King’s, has revived Dracula, or “Drake”, with the goal of using his powers to cure vampires of their weaknesses. As the first of the vampires, Drake’s DNA is untainted and he is able to survive in sunlight. Along with newly-innovative ultraviolet “Sun dog” ammunition, the Nightstalkers have created an experimental bioweapon known as Daystar, capable of killing vampires at the genetic level. However, they need a purer blood source to make it effective. As Drake is too powerful to kill via normal means, they hope that the virus will kill him and, with his blood in the mix, ensure the rest of the species is wiped out, but also fear that this will include Blade, too.Wesley Snipes, Jessica Biel, and Ryan Reynolds in Blade: Trinity (2004)Eager to test Blade, Drake isolates him from the Nightstalkers, as he considers them unworthy of challenging him. He explains that all humans and vampires are inferior in his eyes and that he intends to wipe them from the Earth. Abigail finds evidence of the vampires “Final solution”: a network of ‘farms’ where comatose humans are drained of their blood for vampire consumption. Told the humans are all brain dead, Blade deactivates the farm’s life support systems. Returning to the Nightstalkers’s hideout, Abigail and Blade find all of them dead except for King and Sommerfield’s daughter Zoe, both of whom have been taken captive. A recording left by Sommerfield, Daystar’s creator, reveals that Drake’s blood is all that is needed to make it complete and effective. King is tortured by the vampires for information, but refuses to talk, even when they threaten to turn him and feed him Zoe’s blood.Jessica Biel in Blade: Trinity (2004)Blade and Abigail arrive and free the captives. Drake eventually bests Blade in single combat and prepares to kill him with his own sword. Abigail fires the Daystar arrow, but Drake catches it before it strikes him. He drops it to the floor by Blade, not realising the danger it poses to him. At the last second, Blade stabs him with it, triggering a chemical reaction that completes the “Daystar” virus, releasing it into the air, the virus becomes airborne, killing Danica and the rest of the vampires. As Drake slowly succumbs to his wounds and the virus, he praises Blade for fighting honorably, but warns him that he will eventually succumb to his need for blood, thus proving that Blade already is the new type of vampire.MV5BMjE2OTM0NjU1OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNjAxODQ3._V1_Using the last of his power, Drake disguises himself as Blade. The FBI recover the body and declare Blade legally dead (In the unrated cut, as the FBI tries to do an autopsy on “Blade”, Drake springs back to life, killing several of the autopsy members before ominously looming over one of the orderlies). Hannibal narrates that the virus didn’t kill Blade as the human half of his heart didn’t stop beating, it only slowed down, causing him to enter into a comatose state until his body was ready to fight again. Blade awakens several months later ready to continue his fight against the vampires.MV5BMGU2MzRmMGMtNGZmNS00NzU3LThkMWYtZDAzYTQyMTU4Mjg2XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTI3MDk3MzQ@._V1_Upon my first viewing of BLADE: TRINITY, I was disappointed to say the least. However, after watching it a second time, I found myself liking it a lot more. The problem was that I was expecting BLADE: TRINITY to be the best vampire movie of all time since David S. Goyer was both writing and directing it. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being the best vampire movie of all time. That’s not saying that it’s a bad movie. It’s a fun, entertaining, and stylish picture, but the film suffers from action scenes that are over edited and a poor performance by Dominic Purcell as an underwritten Drake (Dracula). Still, I’d recommend it to fans of comic book movies as long as they don’t expect too much.

REVIEW: THE RAMBLER

CAST

Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns)
Lindsay Pulsipher (The Oregonian)
Natasha Lyonne (American Pie)

Dermot Mulroney and James Cady in The Rambler (2013)Not unlike Reeder’s polarizing debut, The Oregonian, The Rambler follows the most minimal of plotlines. Dermot Mulroney stars as the Rambler, a simple cowboy who’s just been released from a New Mexico prison, finding only dissatisfaction on the outside with a dead-end job, lowlife friends, and the unfaithful girlfriend he left behind. So he sets off to reunite with his brother, who owns a cattle ranch in eastern Oregon. Reeder uses this straightforward setup to essentially lull the viewer into a false sense of security before delivering a series of increasingly disturbing, hallucinatory vignettes that distance the film from its modest beginning.Dermot Mulroney in The Rambler (2013)As the Rambler traverses the lonely highways and back roads of our country’s southwest, he encounters characters both colorful and macabre. There’s the zany doctor (James Cady) with a homemade dream-recording device that literally blows people’s minds, an angelic waitress (The Oregonian’s Lindsay Pulsipher) who suffers multiple bloody deaths, and a naked, half-human/half-monster that haunts the Rambler for reasons unexplained. Scenes of deliriously abject violence and gore force their way into the increasingly unintelligible plot, and before long, Reeder’s road movie unravels into a surreal Grand Guignol.The-Rambler-2013-Movie-1Not only does Reeder abandon virtually all facets of conventional narrative cinema, he also seems completely determined to bully the audience into submission via imagery designed solely to disturb. Like Inland Empire, essentially a three-hour reel of David Lynch’s nightmares, the film is anchored in the sort of dream logic that may only make complete sense to its creator. Reeder’s dogged refusal to allow even the smallest semblance of standard movie comforts—likeable characters, narrative logic, easily identifiable themes—to worm their way into the film may be hubristic, but by that same token, it’s refreshing and revitalizing to watch someone assertively rattle the cages of cinematic form. After all, there’s more than one way to tell a story.

THE NIGHTMARE AFTER KRUSTMAS

4x17-a-very-crappy-christmas-south-park-21651796-500-375 At the First Church of Springfield, very few people are present at Reverend Lovejoy’s service at the fourth Sunday of Advent, and Helen calls him afterwards to meet a “fanclub”, comprised of Ned, Agnes, Sideshow Mel and The Parson, Lovejoy’s boss, that introduces him to the Patriarch, and they tell Lovejoy of summoning more people to the church, he assures them he’s going to bring people since Springfield people are a good Christian community.  Meanwhile, a pagan festival is held in town, with the Simpson family and the others attending, where Theo Jansen shows his feature attraction, the Strandbeest, wind-powered. However the Strandbeest goes wild due to the stronger winds and tramples Krusty that was skating with Sophie. At Springfield General Hospital, Krusty tries to bond with his daughter but finds out she’s Christian and she wants to celebrate Christmas. Seeing the discomfort, Marge invites the pair to spend Christmas with them.

Back at home, Marge brings Maggie a Gnome in Your Home, a gnome that is supposed to watch over her all the time and tell Santa Claus what she’ve been doing, he doesn’t sleep and never shuts his eyes, and Homer tells her that if she isn’t good, he’ll nibble on her fingers. Krusty arrives at the home but brings in a tv troupe to record it, angering Sophie to the point of sending him away. Meanwhile, Reverend Lovejoy tries to convince Dewey Largo and Apu to convert but fails, so he goes to Moe’s Tavern and manages to convert Krusty, who does so after seeing a tased Snake that looked like Jesus through the windows. That night, the Gnome attacks Maggie, after Homer moves her crib closer to him. He talks to her, spits out finger tips and scaring her so much she finds herself at the North Pole, where she meets Santa Claus with Jack Frost, The Abominable Snowman and Wayne Gretzky, that tells her they’ll defeat the Gnome, but he has a gun and they all run off. Maggie enters a cave which turn into the Gnome’s head and eats her.

It was all a nightmare, as Maggie gets woken up by Marge to find it was Christmas. Marge says the Gnome told her she has been good, to her surprise, and, to her horror, she says they’ll leave him in her room all year around. At the church, Lovejoy introduces the newly converted Krusty, and Sophie, seeing the change, is happy. Back at home, Maggie opens her present, and finds out its a Mrs. Gnome in Your Home. In their bedroom that night, Marge surprises Homer with a sexy santa costume, and as they get ready to get on the bed, they find that under the covers it’s full of parts from Mr. and Mrs. Gnome in Your Home, all cut, while Maggie finally goes to sleep happy. Next, Sideshow Mel introduces the Krusty the Clown Sober Contemplation Hour, where Krusty shows how much the conversion changed him, and his show, including Itchy and Scratchy to the surprise of the other kids.  Krusty gets ready for his baptismal, and while approaching Lovejoy, he cracks the ice and fells under. In the hallucination due to his suffocating brain underwater, he visits his dad in an ice castle, and talks with him about his conversion and his role of dad. He’s brought out of the water by Lovejoy, who is praised as a savior, and many people returns to church for his service. Everyone is happy, except Sideshow Mel whose girlfriend left him, and Maggie destroys more Gnomes. At the end, the Gods bicker over if Krusty, by going underwater, recieved the baptismal, while Krusty and Sophie are singing while being carried by the Strandbeest on the snow.

The Simpsons come alive around Christmas, or “Krustmas” in this case, as this episode confirms that the show still has plenty relevant to say about the holiday.  The latest Christams episode is a heartwarming episode just what fans expect from the show this time of year.

dick1This road picture follows a dope fiend named Rick, who believes his goal in life is to track down Ginger, a famous porn star who is currently staying in her Beverly Hills hideaway. Rick is obsessed with Ginger, watches her movies obsessively, and deals drugs on the side, all to the chagrin of his lover Tamara. He decides to seek out Ginger via the road, and along the way picks up Jules, a neurotic, virginal type.cp5I personally enjoyed this movie a lot. It doesn’t have neither a sophisticated story line nor stupid cheesy elements which are so often encountered in mainstream films. The movie has a nothing-to-lose feel about it, which is very relaxing and enjoyable.

Imogene Duncan (Kristen Wiig) was once a promising playwright who now works in a low-paying magazine job in New York City. After her affluent boyfriend leaves her and she is fired from her magazine gig, she stages a suicide attempt in an effort to get her ex’s attention and is accidentally discovered by her friend Dara. Held in the hospital on a 5150 (involuntary psychiatric hold), she is eventually released into her estranged mother’s (Annette Bening) care where she is taken to her childhood home in New Jersey. Shortly after returning she hears a conversation between her mother and her new boyfriend, George Bousche, and learns that her father never died, but instead left the family to pursue a PhD. After learning that her father wrote a book, she goes to the local library and steals it. She discovers from the back cover that he lives in New York City and convinces her mother’s boarder, Lee (Darren Criss), to take her there, but is forced to return after she is barred access from her apartment and her friend, Dara, refuses to let her stay in her home.To pay Lee back for driving her to the city, Imogene goes to see him perform in his Backstreet Boys tribute band. Afterwards they talk about Imogene’s failed career as a playwright. Years ago, after she won a prestigious grant, Imogene failed to write an actual play and now believes she cannot write. Lee accidentally discovered her old plays while living in her room and believes she is talented and should attempt to write again. They sleep together and the following morning she, Lee and her brother, Ralph, head back to the city to go to Dara’s book launch party. The launch goes poorly as no one is particularly happy to see her. Her brother Ralph is nearly arrested and is brought to the party by the police. After they leave the party, Ralph takes them to their father’s house where Ralph reveals that he knew his father was alive the entire time. Imogene and Ralph have dinner with their wealthy father and his new wife where he expresses no regret over his decision to leave them. After their father offers Imogene money to help fix her life she leaves him and returns home to her mother. After Imogene and her mother discuss her father an assassin arrives looking for Bousche and threatens to kill the family. He is prevented from doing so by Imogene, who dons her brother’s human exo-skeleton suit and attacks him. Ultimately Imogene writes a play based on her experiences called Exo-life starring Julia Stiles, which receives a standing ovation. It’s one of those movies about a quirky family, but with enough fresh elements to make it work. The best thing about the film is the top-notch cast. It’s definitely worth checking out.

The series is a satirical depiction of a middle class American lifestyle epitomized by the Simpson family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield and parodies American culture, society, television, and many aspects of the human condition. Modern Simpsons episodes are often both overstuffed and under-imagined, resulting in two indifferent, inadequately realized stories. Even though the show has dropped in creativity and in the joke department, it’s still worthy.960

But the police only arrest Finch for stealing a motorcycle, which Stifler finds amusing. Exasperated by Stifler’s immaturity, the guys blast him, and finally admit that they did not want him to ruin things like he always does. Distraught, Stifler ends the party.Mia leaves Oz, Stifler decides to skip the reunion, and Michelle goes to her grandmother’s. At the reunion, Finch admits that he is an assistant manager at Staples and stole the motorcycle from his boss when he did not receive a raise that was promised. The boys apologize to Stifler at his place of work, and insist that he is their friend saying “he is their asshole”; without him, high school would not have been any fun. Stifler is uplifted by this and quits his job – but not before standing up to his patronizing boss – and attends the reunion. Kevin reconciles with Vicky. Finch makes amends with Selena for lying, and they have sex in the bathroom – but not before a premonition of something vague but bad happening, which is that Stifler is having sex with his mother, as revenge on him for having sex with Stifler’s mother. Oz reunites with Heather (a result of Stifler beating up Ron), and Jim reconciles with Michelle. Jessica (Natasha Lyonne) reveals that she is a lesbian, and with Stifler’s help, Sherman (Chris Owen) hooks up with Loni. Stifler is asked to be a party planner for a wedding for his former lacrosse teammates. He also meets Finch’s mother Rachel (Rebecca De Mornay) who intrigues Stifler by telling him she wishes her son were more into sports. After Rachel makes a brazen sexual pass at Stifler using lacrosse equipment-related innuendos, Rachel and Stifler proceed to have sex on the lacrosse field, while Rachel loudly and passionately agrees with Stifler’s proclamations about his manliness. John is reunited with his estranged buddy, Justin (Justin Isfeld) (MILF Guy #1) and they watch Stifler having sex with Finch’s mom while chanting “MILF! MILF! MILF!”. The next morning, Jim and Kara share a tender moment while apologizing to each other for their behavior. Oz plans to stay in town with Heather, Finch plans a trip with Selena to Europe, and Stifler drops subtle hints about sleeping with Finch’s mom. Kevin proposes a pact for them to reunite once a year. They all agree and make a toast as the franchise’s theme song (“Laid”) plays. As the credits roll, Stifler says, “I fucked Finch’s mom!” in a half-whisper, leaving Finch disgusted. In a mid-credits scene, Noah Levenstein receives sexual gratification from Stifler’s Mom at a movie theatre. There a couple new characters but none of them are annoying or take up too much of the story, all those parts are well cast. Jim’s Dad and Stifler’s Mom are hilarious on screen together. Jim’s Dad is the funniest he has ever been- but again- not in an over the top way. All in all, it’s a well-written, well-rounded film with some good plot twists. Tons of references too the old films. Literally, all of the obscure characters from the first two make an appearance at some point.
