Dairanger, much like its successor Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, is one of the Super Sentai series that has had a more interesting history in the West. While in Japan in was the seventeenth instalment in the franchise (following on from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger) it has no direct Power Rangers adaptation, the monster/mecha footage instead being incorporated into the second season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. The show aired between 1993 and 1994 for a total of 50 episodes and one movie.
Eight thousand years ago, the Daos Civilisation flourished in Southern China. It was made up of three separate tribes – the Dai tribe, the Shura (who went on to become modern day’s humanity) and the Gorma. However one day the Gorma tribe decided to take over both the Daos and the world itself, leading to a 5000 year war between the Dai and the Gorma. The Dai defeated the Gorma, whose magical powers granted them the ability to turn into monsters, with the help of five Dai warriors whose high Qi powers allowed them to control the five mythical Qi beasts.
Years later, the Gorma reappear on Earth and continue their plans for conquest. In retaliation, the mysterious Master Kaku assembles a team of five youths with high Qi levels to become the new Dairangers. These five are Ryo of the Heavenly Fire Star (Ryu Ranger), Daigo of the Heavenly Illusion Star (Shishi Ranger), Shoji of the Heavenly Gravity Star (Tenma Ranger), Kazu of the Heavenly Time Star (Qilin Ranger) and Rin of the Heavenly Wind Star (Houou Ranger). During their battles, they are told they will soon be joined by a sixth Dairanger. This is none other than Kou of the Howling New Star (Kiba Ranger), a nine year old boy who comes from both Dai and Gorma blood.
Gosei (which translates as Five Star just in case you were curious) Sentai Dairanger draws heavily on Chinese mythology and martial arts for its motif. The helmets feel somewhat more elegant than usual (with detailed gold designs and unique mouth-plates for each ranger) and the suits effectively blending the member’s core colour with gold and white. Each ranger used their own unique fighting style (a long with various supernatural Qi powers) which came some impressive battle poses during the transformation roll call. One highlight of the show comes towards the end when the actors manage to pull off some of these complicated poses for an out-of-suit roll call.
Kou is a particularly interesting character. As an nine year old, he’s not the kind of person you’d expect to see as a ranger, and this really shows in his early episodes. The abuse of his powers can feel a little awkward to watch at first, but its worth sticking with as he grows perhaps the most of the entire cast. His back story is both deep and interesting.
Dairanger has quite a lot of secondary characters, who each offer something reasonably integral to the story and one team member’s plot thread. These range from dark karate master Jin Matoba to comedy relief monster trio “The Three Gorma Stooges”.  Alongside with its brilliant costume aesthetic, Dairanger also displays some great mecha designs. Initially the team start with only RyuseiOh, Ryo’s dragon Qi beast which also has the ability to transform into its own robot mode.
When the other four receive their Qi beasts, they have the ability to combine into DairenOh (as well as the lesser used Tenku Qi Den formation). DairenOh is a nice contrast to the lighter, more manoeuvrable RyuseiOh, giving Dairanger a good balance between light and heavily armed mecha. When Kibaranger arrives on the scene with his Won Tiger (which also has the ability to transform into its own singular battle mode), RyuseiOh appears in the spotlight a lot more frequently as the KibadaiOh (Won Tiger plus the Sei-Shishi, Sei-Tenma, Sei-Qilin and Sei-Houou Qi beasts) is shown off. Finally the arsenal is rounded off with Daimugen, a giant turtle which has an upright mode and serves the final component in the mecha’s ultimate combination –  Juukou Qi Den. Juukou Qi Den does suffer from a few problems though – Won Tiger is almost entirely hidden in the combination .
Dairanger is excellent show full of great story, design and choreography.

This movie features five Super Sentai teams, namely Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, Gosei Sentai Dairanger, Kyouryu Sentai Zyuranger, Choujin Sentai Jetman and Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman, that joined forces in defeating the evil Emperor Daidas.
This is the first team-up special made by TOEI after the JAKQ vs Goranger. And one of the starting point for the Sentai VS specials that is continued up to this point. The movie started with the Kakurangers riding their bikes, Shark Machines. We then see a couple taking pictures of each other. Emperor Daidas then appears to conquer planet Earth. This is where the Kakurangers appear. The couple were held hostage by Zaigan, Bango and Damaru. With no other choice, Kakurangers begun to surrender but then other four Sentai teams came to save them. This started a not-so-long team roll call. If ever it was an individual one, this could take at least 10 minutes of the movie’s running time.
The villains then summon countless grunts from three different Super Sentai shows, namely Cotpotros (Dairanger), Golem Soldiers (Zyuranger) and Grinam Soldiers (Jetman). Our heroes then teamed up to battle and defeat all of them. Some of the senshis use their signature attacks, like FiveYellow’s Melody Tact, Pink Swan’s Wing Gauntlet, KirinRanger’s Kirin-ken and much more others. You can also see the Zyuranger utilize the Howling Cannon to easily defeat Zaigan. Dairangers used their DairenRods to send Bango flying in the air. NinjaRed used hi Red Slicer to defeat Damaru. While Red Hawk and FiveRed teamed up to defeat the other two monsters (for me, one of the best scene in this movie since both Red senshis are my favorite).
Once all monsters have been defeated, Emperor Daidas went berserk. This time our heroes sent forth to summon their giant robos namely: Muteki Shogun (Kakuranger), DaiRenOh (Dairanger), DaiZyuJin (Zyuranger), Jet Icarus (Jetman) and FiveRobo (Fiveman). With Emperor Daidas great power, the robos were nearly defeated until the photographer revealed its weakness, the third eye. This was became their target and with Muteki Shogun’s Blazing Shogun Sword (Kaen Shōgun Ken), the evil Emperor Daidas was defeated. With the evil monsters defeated, the world is now at peace. But as long as there’s Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, evil doers will definitely be defeated.
Each Sentai senshi was given an ample screen time to make an appearance and fight with the grunts. But if this was made this year, it will definitely be more awesome. nice to see previous teams again after such a long time. especially  Fiveman and Jetman. If you didn’t know, the photographer was Shirou Izumi. The one who played both Yuuma Ozora/Change Pegasus and Burai/DragonRanger. He had a different role here so he didn’t join the other Sentais. I really do recommend this short movie to any Sentai fans out there especially those who are just new in the fandom. It’s really cool to see how Sentai was before you are even born or just to see how this is different to the Power Rangers you grew up with

The movie starts with the Legends War that was mentioned in episode one of Gokaiger as we see the Goseigers having issues with their fight. They try to retreat to rest for a while, but more of the Zangyack appear, but Akaranger and Big One appear! The two tell the Goseigers about the other sentai members giving up their lives to end the Zangyack as the Goseigers will join them. More troops appear though, but luckily the Extra Heroes appear so that the team could get to the final battle. There we see every sentai warrior excluding the Gokaigers fight the Zangyack and some scenes are from episode one, but they did insert some other scenes along with voice acting from the original actors.

Then it comes as every team tries to get rid of the Zangyack with one big blast as the Extra Heroes join as well as their powers explode and destroy the fleet. Luckily everyone survived, but now their powers have scattered into space as we see more veteran heroes talk to the Goseigers and we see Akared in space. Now time has passed as we see the Gokaigers fight the Barizorg and Insarn and this takes place after their first encounter with Basco. Of course the team take down the troops, but when they take out the Goseiger keys the original members come out and take them as they get their powers back. Insarn and Barizorg soon retreat as Alata tries to talk to the other team about GoseiKnight’s key. With no knowledge of past sentai teams they don’t know who Knight is. Also the Gokaigers don’t want any more keys taken from them as they soon fight. Everything ends at a draw when the two finishers collide and explode as both teams are blasted away. Meanwhile with the Zangyack Gill complaining again about his plans being ruined. Soon though a dark figure appears before them as it is Kuro Jujigun Soutou! He has come back from the dead for revenge on the Super Sentai and the people who believed in them as he will kill them off and has no attentions for Earth. The Zangyack agree with his terms as they make a pact.

I love how each member interacted with each other, but the best was Luka and Moune as they are very similar and it added some nice comedy to the movie. The fights were great as the higher budget does help with that as it can look a little nicer to see. Seeing veterans is always a plus even if they have short scenes as seeing past actors act as their roles once more brings iconic value and tons of nostalgia. This movie is over the top in a good way though as the fights are done well and have amazing moments like the all mecha fight!

This is a movie that is simply freaking amazing if you’re a Sentai fan as there are many references and past methods used in this movie. The fights are amazing with great choreography and many iconic things like past actors and even villains.

Having finished Gokaiger a short while back, it seemed the right time to look back ion it. Gokaiger takes place with our heroes going to Earth in the search of the Greatest Treasure in the Universe. What they don’t know is what happened in the past, their enemies the Zangyack attacked the Earth, but luckily the past 34 sentai all teamed up to fight. In the end they were ready to die for the Earth as they attempt an attack to use all of their powers. The attack works as the Zangyack fleet is destroyed and the warriors survive, but they have lost their powers. The pirates come to Earth and they have all the powers of the past warriors including their own. On Earth they see the Zangyack as a new fleet as come to Earth and seeing them attack the humans reminded them of the pain the Zangyack caused. They attack the Zangyack and win their first battle, but now they have gotten to much fame as bounties are put on them. The team now try to find anyway of finding the treasure and survive from the Zangyack attacking them. Along the way they will meet the past warriors as they will help them retrieve the great powers of the are five members in the team and yes they are indeed aliens because they come from different planets. The leader is Marvelous and along with a cool jacket he is a completely awesome leader as he leads his team well. He knows how to fight as he mostly uses a gun and sword his style of fighting can look carefree at times which he can be at times. Like other past red warriors though his back story comes an important part of the plot as his past rival returns. He was originally part of the Red Pirates as he was with Aka Red and Basco as they went around space to find the Ranger Keys. Soon Basco betrays them though so he can have the keys for himself as he tries to turn them in. Marvelous escapes with the keys and Navi, but it seems that Aka Red didn’t make it. When Basco comes back his personality changes greatly as he wants revenge for the death of Aka Red and won’t have Basco get in the way of his dreams. When Marvelous was alone he started to recruit more team mates along the way. First is Joe who becomes Gokai Blue and he is the silent and tough guy like Abare Blue. He does have a soft spot though because of his past of being part of the Zangyack back then. He couldn’t take it though and he tries to leave along with his friend Cid, but Cid is captured. Joe is left to fight alone, but Marve comes along and saves him and there he recruits him because of his skills. Luka was next as she was in poverty because of the Zangyack and she started to loss many things in her life.

It mostly seems that she is greedy, but she has her own motives. One day she tries to steal from the Zangyack, but she is caught. While fighting the troops Marve and Joe helped out and she was recruited there. Doc was next, but his name is Don. He is mostly a coward who hates to fight, but one day he helps out the crew by doing simple chores and Marve is impressed by him and recruits him. Unlike the others though his fighting style is random and he just pulls things off. Ahim was a princess on her home planet, but it was destroyed by the Zangyack and she joins the team to give hope to any survivors. She may not seem like a fighter as she acts very friendly and even motherly, but when she fights she can really let loose. Finally is Gai who is a human as he gets his powers from past warriors who have died. He tries to become a member, but he has to impress the team first. He is also a complete fan of the Sentai as he knows all of them and when he meets any past heroes he freaks out.

Next are the villains as they are the Zangyack. An empire that controls the whole universe with an iron fist as they attack, enslave, and destroy many planets. The fleet that is sent to Earth is lead by Warz Gil who is the son of the Emperor. He mostly acts like a spoiled brat most of the time when his plans fail, but in soon time he starts to change. Barizorg is Gil’s bodyguard as he mostly stays silent and remains a mystery, but who is he? Insarn is also a member as she mostly is there because she has knowledge in science and helps with making plans. To help as well is Damaras who is very protective of the prince and tries to keep him calm. New Zangyack members show up, but there isn’t much to say about them its just the Emperor with one of his right hand men. The best villain though is Basco who is the rival of Marve as he finds a new partner, Sally a monkey like creature. When they first meet and has even more ranger keys as he summons past sixth rangers to fight the team. His style of living is that he has to lose something to gain anything which is why he tries to get rid of the Red Pirates so he could have the ranger keys and the treasure. He wants the treasure as well, but he will let the team do some of the work so he could just finish them off and just stop there.

This is an anniversary series not only does the team use past powers, but they also meet past warriors. These episodes are mostly tributes to the past as they use elements from those series. Each have some form of nostalgia to them as they can bring simple things or even jokes referencing the series. Heck even the main characters are tributes to the usual type of characters in Sentai. The series uses a lot of nostalgia which is the best part because they bring back many actors as this is the best way to use the nostalgia factor. Each episode also has an important fight that has the instrumental opening of the series play during the fights, it just brings a lot memories. I really like that the team still fight like themselves though, they may have different powers, but they still fight like themselves. The best example is Doc who has a very improved style of fighting and even with becoming different rangers he can still stick to his comedic fighting. Each character has a back story of some type and it makes you feel for the characters which is another great thing. This is probably the best cast I have seen, again these characters are tributes and even mix character traits which works very well and all the actors are great not a single bad one! The fights are simply amazing as its great to see the past powers be used in today’s time and it keeps fights fresh as the team can think of many combinations. Basco is the best villain no doubt as he is tough and is a guy you love to hate. He is completely vile and he stays like that which is the best part! They even teamed up with some past warriors!

Its one of the best Sentai… no one of the best Toku shows! The anniversary theme is heavily used and can bring nostalgic moments. The story still stays intact and so what the series didn’t have a tribute for ever series they still got at least one actor from all 34 series! With that its better to see the series give focus on the story then the nostalgia. The nostalgia is very well done, but it shouldn’t be the major focus its great to see that the series still carries it’s own story. All the heroes are great and the rival villain Basco is simply amazing! This would be a great start to new fans because it shows what the series is like and can give interest in other series. In the end the series only big flaw are the main villains, but everything balances perfectly as we get great development and great tributes to the franchise.
