UntitledThe Tanner-Fuller Family is back for a third season. Fuller House is the proof that nostalgia never dies.  As the season kicks off, the theme is immediately revealed. Whereas Season 2 focused on various holidays throughout the year, this time out the episodes encompass summer vacation. It’s an odd choice to make for a series debuting just as summer comes to an end but gives the show some ideas to play with none the less, whether it’s Jackson (Michael Campion) being stuck in summer school thanks to his terrible grades, or Max (Elias Harger) joining forces with Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) to throw a pool party.UntitledNaturally, the bulk of the show’s storylines goes to the adults as they figure out their love lives and their futures while also raising a house full of kids. As with Season 2, DJ (Candace Cameron-Bure) is still caught between feelings she has for her boyfriend Matt (John Brotherton) and her ex Steve (Scott Weinger). Given that she’s in a committed relationship and Steve is engaged to another woman though, the flirtation between the two isn’t quite as honest and innocent as it once was. Given that the first half of the season ends on the cliffhanger of DJ accidently revealing her feelings to Steve en route to the latter’s wedding, this is clearly a story that’s not going to end anytime soon. UntitledIn an unconventional choice for the streaming site, Netflix chose to split up the third season of the warm and fuzzy 80s/90s reboot, debuting the first nine episodes of the season in September, just in time for the 30th anniversary of the debut of the original series, and dropping the back nine episodes just in time for the Christmas holidays. At the end of the first half the season, we were left with a bit of a cliffhanger, with the entire Fuller House party on their way to Japan for Steve and C.J.’s wedding. In a somewhat sleepy haze, D.J. – without realizing she’s talking to Steve instead of Kimmy – confesses to Steve that she had planned on picking him, because she truly feels like they were always soulmates and meant to be together. maxresdefaultWe pick up the second half of the season once the plane lands in Japan and the gang is off to explore this new country in a location-based episode that’s reminiscent of the Full House Disney World special. Steve, unsure what to do about this new information that D.J. may still have feelings for him, confides in Kimmy, and decides to talk to D.J. about it. However, before he’s able to discuss it with her, Matt proposes and she says yes while Steve overhears the entire proposal. Fuller-House-Season-3-Episode-11-11-2becGiving up, Steve and C.J. continue on with their wedding, until D.J. accidentally throws one of the wedding rings into the koi pond and has to chase down a famous koi fish to get it back. When she does so, it finally comes out that Steve overheard D.J. confess her true feelings to him, and that Steve might feel the same way.  So, Steve leaves C.J. at the alter, in a moment that feels reminiscent of every 90s romantic comedy ever, and when Matt gets up to announce his engagement to D.J., D.J. winds up breaking off their engagement. Thus ends a whirlwind trip to Japan and starts a new potential rekindled romance for Steve and D.J.fuller-house-season-3The show has also managed to build up characters we can certainly care about, even as we wade through all the terrible dancing and silly excuses to shove in Stephanie’s singing.  The end of season three brings us somewhat full circle, celebrating Full House’s 30th debut anniversary in a season finale that brings the whole family back together with a lot of big changes. First, Danny and Becky are ousted from their show when their contract is up for renewal. Becky is asked to come back as a host on a different show, but Danny is out of work now and announces to his daughters that he plans on moving back in with them. Second, Joey’s wife gets a comedy gig on a cruise ship circuit, and Jesse and Joey go in on buying a laundromat that they plan on turning into a club, so both Jesse and Joey plan on moving back to San Francisco.Third, Kimmy volunteers to be the surrogate for Stephanie and Jimmy’s baby, and the invitro process is successful, so Kimmy is now pregnant with Stephanie and Jimmy’s child. Fuller-House-Season-3-Episode-18-2-7a83Finally, Steve gets offered a position as the foot doctor for the LA Lakers, which would mean that he has to move to LA for six months, effectively putting D.J. and his relationship on hold once again. He decides to turn the position down, but D.J. tells him to go for it, as it’s a dream job for him. And so, once again, the universe – or, at least, the show writers – put a wedge between our two potential soulmates, with the promise that perhaps, in six months’ time, they might finally be together for good.Fuller-House-Season-3-Episode-16-17-3bd5Whether the show gets picked up for a fourth season or not, this season leaves us in a good place.

After defeating Owen Shaw and his crew and securing amnesty for their past crimes, Dominic “Dom” Toretto, Brian O’Conner and the rest of their team have returned to the United States to live normal lives again. Brian begins to accustom himself to life as a father, while Dom tries to help Letty Ortiz regain her memory. Meanwhile, Owen’s older brother, Deckard Shaw, breaks into the secure hospital that the comatose Owen is being held in and swears vengeance against Dom and his team, before breaking into Luke Hobbs’ Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) office to extract profiles of Dom’s crew. After revealing his identity, Shaw engages Hobbs in a fight, and escapes when he detonates a bomb that severely injures Hobbs. Dom later learns from his sister Mia that she is pregnant again and convinces her to tell Brian. However, a bomb, disguised in a package sent from Tokyo, explodes and destroys the Toretto house just seconds after Han, a member of Dom’s team, is killed by Shaw in Tokyo. Dom later visits Hobbs in a hospital, where he learns that Shaw is a rogue special forces assassin seeking to avenge his brother. Dom then travels to Tokyo to claim Han’s body, and meets and races Sean Boswell, a friend of Han’s who gives him personal items found at Han’s crash site.Back at Han’s funeral in Los Angeles, Dom notices a car observing them, and after a chase, confronts its driver, who is revealed to be Shaw. Both prepare to fight, but Shaw flees when a covert ops team arrives and opens fire, led by Frank Petty, a man who calls himself Mr. Nobody. Petty says that he will assist Dom in stopping Shaw if he helps him obtain God’s Eye, a computer program that uses digital devices to track down a person, and save its creator, a hacker named Ramsey, from a mercenary named Mose Jakande. Dom, Brian, Letty, Roman Pearce, and Tej Parker then airdrop their cars over the Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan, ambush Jakande’s convoy, and rescue Ramsey. The team then heads to Abu Dhabi, where a billionaire has acquired the flash drive containing God’s Eye, and manages to steal it from the owner. With God’s Eye near telecommunications repeaters, the team tracks down Shaw, who is waiting at a remote factory. Dom, Brian, Petty and his team attempt to capture Shaw, but are ambushed by Jakande and his men and forced to flee while Jakande obtains God’s Eye. At his own request, the injured Petty is then left behind to be evacuated by helicopter while Brian and Dom continue without him. Left with no other choice, the crew returns to Los Angeles to fight Shaw, Jakande and his men. Meanwhile, Brian promises Mia that once they deal with Shaw, he will retire and fully dedicate himself to their family. While Jakande pursues Brian and the rest of the team with a stealth helicopter and an aerial drone, Ramsey attempts to hack into God’s Eye. Hobbs, seeing the team in trouble, leaves the hospital and destroys the drone with an ambulance. Ramsey then regains control of God’s Eye and shuts it down. Meanwhile, Dom and Shaw engage in a one-on-one brawl on a parking garage, before Jakande intervenes and attacks them both. Shaw is defeated when part of the parking garage collapses beneath him. Dom then launches his vehicle at Jakande’s helicopter, tossing Shaw’s bag of grenades onto its skids, before injuring himself when his car lands and crashes. Hobbs then shoots the bag of grenades from ground level, destroying the helicopter and killing Jakande. Dom is pulled from the wreckage of his car, believed to be dead. As Letty cradles Dom’s body in her arms, she reveals that she has regained her memories, and that she remembers their wedding. Dom regains consciousness soon after, remarking, “It’s about time”.Shaw is taken into custody by Hobbs and locked away in a secret, high-security prison. At a beach, Brian and Mia play with their son while Dom, Letty, Roman, Tej, and Ramsey observe, acknowledging that Brian is better off retired with his family. Dom silently leaves, but Brian catches up with him at a crossroad. As Dom remembers the times that he had with Brian, they bid each other farewell and drive off in separate directions.Fast & Furious 7 is a no-holds, over- the-top and mindless action film, but this aside, it is an extremely entertaining and fun film to watch. With an all-star cast and some brilliant action sequences, Fast & Furious 7 is proof that certain franchises can continually make great movies. The most notable moment however in the entire film is the emotional and respectful ending during the send-off of Paul Walker, the film finishing with a montage of Walker in the previous six films, finishing with just two words. A fitting end for a great actor.

REVIEW: PRECIOUS CARGO

CAST

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved By The Bell)

Claire Forlani (Mallrats)
Jenna B. Kelly (Extraction)
John Brotherton (Fuller House)
Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick)
Lydia Hull (Van Wilder)

A lot has been said and written about this film, mostly about its troubled production – forget all that: it has no meaning whatsoever for the experience this film provides. A word of advice though: if you go in expecting a testosterone-fueled revenge thriller in the vein of ‘Die Hard’, you’ll likely end up disappointed. It’s simply not that kind of film – but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it if you watch it with the right expectations. ‘Precious Cargo’ opens with a standoff for the ages; we see snippets of memories showing a peaceful life – and soon the loss of that peace, and the loss of life. The images change and we hear the soothing sound of shooting blanks as we follow the camera via a long tracking shot over a seaside crime scene; it’s an image that seems to imply peace, evoking nature’s beauty with an almost meditative quality – before the barrel of a rifle appears in the frame. Those first three minutes I just described set the tone for the film perfectly. It’s a film that tells a story of harrowing circumstances through images that are breathtakingly beautiful; a film about survival and death and shocking acts of sudden violence – and yet a film that, despite all its visceral intensity, also has a quiet, immersive quality to it that feels almost hypnotic. Many critics and reviewers have pointed out the stark contrast between the film’s poetic beauty and the ugliness of its violence – implying the director wanted to use this contrast to make a certain point regarding mankind’s interference with nature. While that would seem pretty obvious (and it probably is at least partly true), I left the film feeling the director had shown a vaster, far too complete image of the clash between Zack Morris and the seedy crime underworld to justify such a simplistic interpretation of the events portrayed on screen. Whether intentionally or not, the filmmakers shows the star of his film with a complexity and honesty that we normally don’t get to see in these kinds of stories. And I’m not talking about Mark-Paul Gosslear here (who gives a no-holds-barred, crazy good performance and I’d love to see him win an Oscar for this film) – the star of this film is not a person: it IS the tits on the scene with the dumb blondes, plain and simple. The revenge plot – which felt almost like an afterthought or a ploy to give the film a certain structure and a proper ending – is not really the film’s main theme or strongest aspect, and it certainly isn’t the reason that made this film so compelling to watch for me. Such stories have been told often enough – and often better – than in ‘Precious Cargo’. No, what really made this film stand out for me is that I have NEVER seen a Hollywood film (any film, really – apart from documentaries) that showed speedboats in such an unflinchingly honest and mesmerizing way as was the case here. And the way I perceive it, the director sees his human protagonists as being very much a part of waterside existence as a whole – regardless of their destructive behaviour. It’s that refreshingly wholistic approach (which some viewers might perceive as nihilism on the director’s part) that I found to be the film’s biggest accomplishment: it depicts the people in this story as just another species trying to survive in that perilous frontier-world. The emphasis is not really on the moral aspects of the brutal injustice that the main character suffers or how the beachgoers are cruelly exploited; we witness all that – but Iñarritu keeps a certain emotional distance, as if he were shooting a documentary about predatory wildlife. And just like the boat attack, most of the violence in this film comes as a reaction of defense. Be it self-defense, defending one’s offspring or defending territory and valuable resources. Even the character that comes closest to an actual villain is driven by fear – not hate, and his most obvious character defects were caused by a very traumatizing experience. As in seaside settings, there is a simple (if often brutal) logic to why most characters, men or beasts, act the way they do in ‘Precious Cargo’ (OK, maybe not the bimbos – but I didn’t say the film was perfect, did I). And the boat attack was the most realistic depiction of a water-based attack I have ever seen on film. All in all, this film felt less like a story of revenge and more like an ode to the visceral beauty of nature and the relentless, savage force that is life; it provides an immensely absorbing – and touching – experience to those who have an affinity for the wilderness, but it’s also a visual masterpiece and a great piece of old-school filmmaking for lovers of Cinema.

When I found out that they were making this I had mixed feelings of happy nostalgia and preemptive disappointment. While the child in me wants this to make it due to fond memories of watching the original, another part of me was sure it would be horrible. It turned out to be great after binge watching season 1 I was stoked for season 2 and once again it did not disappoint.  The episodes this season are

Before I started watching Fuller House, I read a bunch of reviews and was so disappointed that it was getting ripped to shreds that I almost didn’t give it a chance, but curiosity got the best of me and I started watching. To echo some of the other reviewers, yes, the first episode is incredibly cheesy and feels more like an homage to the old cast than an introduction to a new show, but after just the main cast of Fuller House is left, I found it actually quite fantastic.  Some say that it’s just rehashing the original show and in a lot of ways, they have taken an extremely similar storyline, but beyond that it is totally its own. But what I absolutely love about it is that it feels like a 90s sitcom. I grew up watching Full House, Fuller House can stand on its own two legs without their Full House background and I have been very pleasantly surprised.

Nowadays there really isn’t much family friendly material on TV; there are very few shows that aren’t filled with innuendo, language, sex, and so on. But Fuller House stays true to the Full House values and while it may be cheesy at times, each episode has a moral to the story where someone learned something and is better for having learned it. It teaches the audience what’s really important in life and how much families really matter. If you’re looking for a Modern Family type of show, you will not find that in Fuller House, but if you’re missing the sitcoms of the 90s that you could comfortably watch with your whole family, you will love Fuller House.
