A NEW KIND OF CHRISTMAS

GUEST CAST
Jaime Pressly (Mom)
Rick Pasqualone (Hop)

Mel’s sister, Meredith (Jaime Pressly), comes home from prison on furlough to celebrate Christmas with the kids and Mel, and seems unruffled by Joe’s obvious animosity towards her.

Jaime Pressly adds a new dynamic to the characters, sadly this was the only time she guest starred in the shows for season run. It was good to finally see the character as she had been mentioned on the shoe countless times. all in all a good Christmas episode to what has become a missed show.

A MELANIE AND JOSIAH CHRISTMAS

GUEST CAST
Christopher Rich (Perception)
Trevor Donovan (Savages)
Michael Rider (Road House)
Mel and Joe are about to celebrate their first Christmas as a married couple, which leads to a competition over whose family ornament should take the top spot on the tree. Both Mel and Joe have a flashback set in southern North America in the 1800s.

Now this Christmas episode is one of the most bizarre having Melissa tell a story of her alleged ancestors is intriguing  though it does seem a little out of place but then so did the Halloween episode. This became the final Christmas episode as the show was let go after season 4.

Mel Burke is having trouble with her niece, Lennox. As she tries to juggle being a councillor and a guardian, she gets a little overwhelmed. Her assistant, Rhonda, suggests she get a nanny. Mel is hesitant to do so until she finds out Lennox wrote a poem about her principal, Miss Lunt (Vernee Watson), that wasn’t so nice. Mel relents and decides to hire a nanny. Before leaving for a meeting, Joseph “Joe” Longo knocks on her door. He apologizes for an outburst and asks if she can get him a job. Mel realizes he was the head of her brother-in-law’s company. (It is mentioned that her brother-in-law ran off leaving the company in disarray and it is implied that he ran off with the millions Joe made for him and left his wife to take the blame. The result is her being in federal prison and the reason for the children having to stay with Mel.) She explains that there is a hiring freeze downtown so she can’t get him a job. Joe then offers to be her new nanny. Joe takes Ryder to school so Mel won’t miss her meeting. Mel comes home later to take Lennox to school so she can apologize to Miss Lunt. If she doesn’t apologize, Lennox cannot go back to school. Mel finds that Ryder is still at home and Lennox is gone. After leaving, Joe sees an online posting from Lennox and realizes she is on the roof. He convinces her to go eat her “big bowl of stink” instead of letting Mel eat it for her. Mel comes back impressed until she finds out Joe paid Lennox fifty dollars to go to the school and apologize to the principal. They later decide to give him a try being the nanny. This show has a bit if everything. Witty humour. Not so witty humour. Moments of nostalgia for those of us who loved Melissa Joan hart in Sabrina and Clarissa explains it all. But this show also has moments of real emotion that stop you in your tracks for a second and keep you gripped to the underlying story lines. Each character has their own quirks and as you get to know them you really begin to appreciate the level of detail the writers have gone to in order to keep the characters alive and interesting.

zeta-b
In this Batman Beyond spinoff, Zeta, an assassination & infiltrator robot, rebels against its programming. The authorities think it has been reprogrammed by their enemies, and tries to bring Zeta in for reprogramming. Zeta goes on the run, trying to find his creators and assisted by an orphan girl, Ro.
zetaproject1
As a spin off for a character introduced in Batman Beyond, this cartoon series went beyond the scope of adventure. Zeta was an experimental infiltration robot equipped with weaponry and a holographic self-projector that allows it to assume any identity. However, negating his own programming, he refused to kill. He fled his employers merely attempting to find his creator to prove that he is acting on his own free will. The government doesn’t know that, and hunt him down as they think he is rogue. Along the way Zeta hooks up with Ro, a teenage girl, and they assist each other in their treks.
165770_fullDiedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) lends his voice to the peaceful, naive and near-human robot, sounding the least bit threatening and true to Zeta’s nature. The friendship between the child-like Zeta and Ro is genuinely portrayed. The supporting characters who chase him are great, including the government agents, and a young genius whom at one point reprogrammed Zeta. The Zeta Project is indeed a combination of Short Circuit and The Fugitive, balanced out by fantastic action, excellent characterization, and plenty of comedic moments.  In one episode, Batman Beyond even makes a cool guest appearance. Sadly, KidsWB canceled this exceptional show after 2 seasons, leaving Ro and Zeta’s quest hanging.

A college male receives a note under his dorm door that says “do you wanna know a secret?” He assumes it is from his girlfriend Beth (Dorie Barton). He goes into the hallway to find her and is killed by someone in a mask. One year later Beth and her friends, including her new boyfriend Hank (Joey Lawrence), go on vacation in Florida. The group includes Oz (Thomas Anthony Jones), Tina (Leonora Scelfo), Nellie (Elsie Escobar) and Brad (Chad Allen). The first night Brad tries to hit on Beth, but she explains that they are just friends. Brad is attacked on a sailboat while the others are in the house. His bloody shirt is found in the water, though his body is missing. The group sees a message on his computer: “do you wanna know a secret?” One night while drinking, Tina kisses Hank. Beth refuses to talk to him until the next night when he saves her from getting roofied at a club. Beth goes outside the club for air, where she witnesses the boy who tried to drug her being murdered by someone in a mask. When the cops arrive, they find “do you wanna know a secret?” is carved in the boy’s back. An FBI agent (Jeff Conaway) tells the kids not to leave the house, as they are all suspects for both murders.

The next day while Hank and Beth are showering, Oz is attacked in the kitchen. Outside at the pool, Nellie realizes that Tina’s throat has been slit. Before she can call for help she is attacked from behind and falls into the pool. Oz regains consciousness, and sees the same message written on the wall in blood. He runs outside to find both Tina and Nellie dead. When the cops arrive, Oz is arrested for the murders. The cop who arrested Oz is in the bathroom at the precinct when he sees the message on the wall. He is then murdered by the masked figure. Oz is released. Beth is waiting outside the police station when she sees a truck drive by. The driver is wearing the mask she remembers from the murder at the club. Hank is nowhere to be found so she follows the truck out to the glades and waits for Oz to meet up with her.

Oz and Beth search for the killer in the dark woods. They are separated and Oz is knocked out from behind. He wakes up in the basement of a church and hears Beth’s scream. Upstairs in the church Beth is tied up in a wedding dress and blindfolded. The man removes Beth’s blindfold and his mask, revealing himself as Brad. Beth sees that the dead bodies of Tina, Nellie, and the pastor are set up in the pews, as if watching. Brad starts cutting Beth’s dress open with a knife, when Oz shows up. Brad and Oz fight but Brad wins and ties Oz up again. Beth asks Brad why he killed everyone. He explains that the secret is he loves Beth so much he would do anything, including staging his own death and killing all the others. He then holds up Hank’s severed head. Beth secretly unties her hands and attacks Brad. He knocks her to the ground but Oz gets untied and attacks Brad. As Brad is about to kill Oz, Beth stabs him through his entire body. As Oz and Beth exit the church, Brad jumps up again and is shot by the FBI Agent. The Agent reveals that the dead pastor was also Brad’s father.Image result for do you wanna know a secret ? (2001)A few small areas of success and a lot of major problems doom this potentially entertaining but ultimately unsuccessful attempt. Had it followed through more on the slasher motives, this would be watchable, but as it is, this is really only recommended for the most die-hard slasher completists or those looking for a solid laugh.

Amy Mayfield (Jennifer Morrison) is unsure about her thesis. But after a conversation with security guard Reese Wilson (Loretta Devine), she decides to make a film about a serial killer murdering in the fashion of urban legends. Meanwhile, a student named Lisa (Jacinda Barrett) feels dazed and prepares to leave the bar, when someone abducts her. She wakes up in a bathtub filled with ice and discovers that her kidney was removed. Attacked by her abductor, she tries to flee through the window and is decapitated in the process. Lisa is not missed as she was about to go on a trip. The next day, Amy is preparing the shooting of her thesis film but is deserted by the assigned camera man, Toby Belcher (Anson Mount), who accuses Amy of stealing his thesis idea. Shooting begins with another camera man, Simon. When Sandra (Jessica Cauffiel), Amy’s actress friend who played a victim in a scene, returns to an empty studio after forgetting her keys, she is attacked and stabbed to death by the same killer who killed Lisa. Her friends witness her death when the material is smuggled into a sequence of takes of the scene, but discount it as another piece of acting, wondering who shot it. As there is no body and Sandra was about to go on a trip, her disappearance goes unnoticed.Image result for urban legends: final cutTravis (Matthew Davis) is found to have committed suicide at the campus tower. At the funeral, Amy is offered help by Graham (Joey Lawrence), a student from a prosperous Hollywood background. She refuses, wishing to make it on her own. This offends Graham, who thinks it hypocritical, as Amy grew up in Hollywood as the daughter of a famous documentary film maker before moving to Chicago. After she has detected the assault on Simon on the tapes, she is confronted by the killer. During the ensuing chase, she loses the tapes and cannot prove her claims to a skeptical Reese. Amy now believes the claims of Trevor and meets up with him but, he still refuses to inform the police, hinting at a criminal past.Image result for urban legends: final cutThe next scene to be shot involves the “Tunnel of Terror”, which is set up in an old carnival ride. Sophomores Stan (Anthony Anderson) and Dirk (Michael Bacall) are attacked and electrocuted by the killer while preparing the tunnel. Amy, who is taking a tour of the tunnel, discovers the corpses and is again confronted by the killer. She escapes again and informs the police, who attribute the deaths to accidental electrocution. Amy is comforted by Trevor. They begin having sex when Trevor suddenly stabs Amy. She wakes up and realizes that it was only a dream. Seeing a light on at the bell-tower, she decides to go there and finds her lesbian friend, Vanessa (Eva Mendes).Image result for urban legends: final cutThey suspect Toby, the only person working on the film left alive. They kidnap him and call in Professor Solomon (Hart Bochner) to present their suspicions. However, Toby reveals that Travis faked Toby’s sound credit to help him graduate admitting that he never went anywhere near Travis’ film. In the confusion, Trevor manages to disarm the professor. Solomon then threatens Trevor with a shovel while Amy gets a hold of the gun and threatens Solomon. Amy got a hold of Reese’s gun but hesitates to fire. Solomon attacks her again, but she shoots him unconscious. The scene then cuts to the Hitchcock awards, where an award is posthumously given to Travis. As Trevor is about to accept the award on his late brother’s behalf, a sniper appears in the rafters, only to be shot down by Reese. The altercation is then revealed to be a scene in Amy’s new film “Urban Legends”. It’s also revealed that Toby and Graham survived their attacks and are now busily working on her behalf. The final scene show Solomon in a mental institution where, after watching Amy’s film, the nurse asks him if he enjoyed the movie. He is wheeled out by Brenda Bates (Rebecca Gayheart), the killer from the previous film.Image result for urban legends: final cut rebecca gayheartA lot better than expected, with just a few mild flaws that don’t quite make this one as bad as it’s been perceived. Give it a chance if you enjoy slashers or the general state of the slashers from that time-period or even just curious and open-minded.

melissa-joey-19

A fun episode, plus the Sabrina references were funny to anyone who had watched that show.

WITCH CAME FIRST

Mel’s doctor drops by on Halloween to convince Mel she was once a teenage witch and needs to battle the evil Dark Lord. At first Mel and Joe don’t believe her, but then Joe’s Halloween robot comes to life, and Mel accidentally turns Lennox into a cat. Joe begins to show a darker side of himself and Mel tries to trigger his memory to get the ghoul out of his body.

This was excellent reunion for Melissa Joan Hart and Beth Broderick, plus the numerous Sabrina references were great, the whole was is it real or was it  a dream thing is funny as it lets the audience decide which is which.
