7691544cfca7c27ef4There’s little to be said about ‘Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular’, as it is merely a swift celebration of the ‘Shrek’ universe. Unlike the films, which have an emotional tie for Shrek’s character, this short is lacking a sense of story progression, which is a small shame in some way because ‘Christmas-tacular’ marks a return to eccentric, unrelenting humour in the manner of the original film and the first sequel; that is, a constant barrage of visual and verbal puns that the producers behind the third and fourth movies could not quite replicate, despite their best efforts.

Every one is catered for with screen time shared equally between Shrek’s ever-popular family and friends, the joy of which is found in discovering the festive season through the perspective of a flea-ridden cat, or a living party snack. It is characterisation like this that contributes to the endearing nature of the series. ‘Christmas-tacular’ doesn’t quite hit a home run like ‘Shrek the Halls’ before it, as that short successfully intertwined a simple plot that added the necessary weight to contain the sheer madness that punctuates nearly every moment of this franchise. However, Donkey’s festivities are a great way to kick-start your own Christmas season.

25 DAYS CHRISTMAS REVIEW: SHREK THE HALLS

CAST

Mike Myers (Austin Powers)
Eddie Murphy (Dr. Dolittle)
Cameron Diaz (Knight and Day)
Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro)

The special is set shortly after the events of Shrek the Third (and before the events of Shrek Forever After), as Shrek and Fiona’s children are still infants. Shrek (Mike Myers) is quietly living in the swamp with his family when the Christmas season arrives. Under Donkey’s (Eddie Murphy) urging, Shrek reluctantly promises Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) a special Christmas surprise. Shrek goes to the local bookstore in Far, Far Away to try to find a present for Fiona, but since he does not know what Christmas is all about, the shopkeeper (Marissa Jaret Winokur) gives Shrek a copy of Christmas For Village Idiots, a step-by-step guide to celebrating the holiday. Shrek proceeds to follow the book’s advice by decorating the house and getting a tree so he can spend a quiet Christmas Eve with his family, but Donkey brings the entire “family” to the swamp, ruining Shrek’s plans.
As Shrek tries to tell his own version of “A Visit from St. Nicholas (The Night Before Christmas)”; Gingy (Conrad Vernon), Donkey, and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) interrupt and each tell their own version of a Christmas story. Donkey tells of floats coming to the swamp. At the end, Donkey tells of licking an enormous Santa figure that is made out of waffles, but in reality he accidentally starts licking Shrek’s leg. Puss tells his version of the story of Santa Claus, but ends up playing with the ball point of his Santa hat, while in reality he is playing with one of the baubles from the christmas tree. However, Gingy’s story is not happy, but horrifying, as he tells about how his girlfriend Suzy got eaten up by Santa Claus. To which Donkey finds it unbelievable, with Gingy screaming “You weren’t there!”. Donkey finds Shrek’s Christmas for Village Idiots book, and the ensuing fight over the book destroys all of Shrek’s decorations, furniture and the tree. Shrek then loses his temper and ends up ejecting his friends from his house.

With the Christmas spirit ruined, Fiona and Shrek have a talk, after which she takes the children and leaves the swamp to go and apologize to their friends. Shrek feels downhearted that Christmas Eve did not go as he hoped it would, and he looks at one of Donkey’s Christmas cards that says, From Donkey & family. Fiona catches up to their friends and explains to Donkey what Shrek had wanted for Christmas. Shrek catches up with the group, and apologizes for losing his temper. Donkey is shocked to learn that this is Shrek’s first Christmas, because “ogres don’t celebrate anything.” Donkey also apologizes for being annoying, and explains that Christmas never goes as planned and according to his mother, “‘Christmas ain’t Christmas until somebody cries’, and that’s usually me.” After a snowball fight, the friends return to the swamp, and Shrek tells his story, featuring Ogre Claus. Soon they hear bells and go outside to see Santa and his reindeer, although Gingy runs back inside screaming in terror. It’s a must for Shrek fans and anyone who just wants a different Christmas film to watch at xmas. I should also say this Dvd has loads of special features on it aswell as the film

Charlie Hinton is a food products marketing executive whose wife Kim Hinton has just gone back to work as a lawyer. They enroll their child, Ben Hinton, in Chapman Academy, a very academic pre-school headed by a woman named Miss Harridan. But when Kim finds out how much the parents have to pay per month, she takes Ben out of Chapman and looks for other daycare facilities. Some time later, Charlie and his best friend, Phil Ryerson, are laid off. Unable to find either a suitable daycare or new employment, Charlie decides to open up a day care center in his home with the help of Phil, and calls it Daddy Day Care. At first, the local parents are suspicious of men wanting to work with kids, but as Daddy Day Care is cheaper and more child-centered than Chapman Academy, the latter begins to lose students.Unwilling to accept the presence of competition, Miss Harridan attempts to shut down Daddy Day Care by notifying child services that Charlie and Phil are not following the relevant regulations. Mr. Dan Kubitz, a director of child services, notifies them of the codes that need to be fixed, which Charlie and Phil quickly correct. Daddy Day Care grows in popularity and attracts more children. Mr. Kubitz informs Phil and Charlie that they need another employee to keep an appropriate ratio of children to caregivers. Luckily, Marvin, a nerdy former co-worker, had dropped by, and after seeing how good he is at entertaining the children, Phil and Charlie ask him about joining. Marvin is unsure at first, but then finds himself falling for Kelli, the single mother of Dylan and agrees.Later, Mr. Kubitz tells them they have too many kids to stay at Charlie’s residence. They find an abandoned building with potential, but do not have the money to buy it. They hold a fund-raising event called “Rock for Daddy Day Care”, which Miss Harridan finds out about. She and her assistant, Jenny, wreck the festival by unplugging a bouncy castle, filling the food with cockroaches, switching face paint with glue, releasing animals from the petting zoo, and turning on the park sprinklers. Daddy Day Care does not raise enough money. Shortly after, Charlie and Phil are offered their old jobs back, accepting Miss Harridan’s offer to take the kids back to the academy. Marvin, heartbroken by the closing of the day care, declines Charlie and Phil’s offer to be on board their marketing panel.Charlie soon realizes during a cereal pitch that the time he has given to his new life, and the increased bond with his son is “the most important thing”, and starts to question the morality of his current assignment (which involves marketing high-sugar breakfast cereal to children). He quits his job and tells Phil to quit with him. Then he and Phil pick up Marvin before heading off to Chapman Academy. During the confrontation between Miss Harridan and Charlie, Jenny makes the comparisons between the two. She discovers that unlike her boss, Charlie and Phil actually took the time to get to know the children to understand their needs. They successfully convince the children and their parents to return to Daddy Day Care, making it a raging success, causing Chapman Academy to shut down for good. Marvin is now in a relationship with Kelli, Miss Harridan gets demoted to a crossing guard, and Jenny joins Daddy Day Care at the new facility. The movie is harmless and fun. Not a great film, just a fun one to pass the time.

At the Bureau of National Security headquarters, Special Agent Alex Scott is accosted by his rival, Carlos, before being briefed on his next mission. Scott is assigned to recover a stolen fighter, the “Switchblade,” plane sold to arms dealer Arnold Gundars. Gundars is sponsoring Middleweight world boxing champion Kelly Robinson’s next match and using the event to auction the plane. The agency has contacted Robinson and assigned him to be the civilian cover for Scott’s mission. Scott and Robinson travel to Budapest, where Scott plans to penetrate Gundars’ compound during a pre-fight party.

Arriving in Budapest, Robinson is kidnapped. During the interrogation Scott bursts in, frees Robinson, and fights the kidnappers before revealing this was a test which Kelly passed by not divulging Scott’s identity. At Gundars’s party, Robinson replaces Gundars’s pen with a duplicate fitted with a tracking device before confronting his European challenger in the party’s boxing ring. Scott, posing as a member of Robinson’s entourage, uses this as a diversion to enter Gundars’ private office and hack his computer. Robinson arrives unexpectedly and trips an alarm. The two are forced to escape and manage to evade their pursuers by hiding in a sewer.

After returning to base, Robinson coaches Scott into winning Agent Rachel Wright by feeding him lines from the song “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gaye. Scott succeeds, but is interrupted by movement on the pen tracking device. He tracks Gundars to a bathhouse, which Scott believes is a dead end. Robinson has a hunch that the plane is hidden in the building, leading the two into a fight with Gundars’s men. Gundars speeds off in his car, with Wright in pursuit. Wright’s car explodes and Scott blames Robinson for her death. The two engage in a public confrontation that leads to Robinson’s arrest. Scott convinces the BNS that the operation can continue and tracks Gundars down again.

Robinson reaches the arena just in time for his fight. Scott finds Gundars with terrorists busy fitting the plane with a nuclear missile. Scott takes the men by surprise and forces them to surrender, before being disarmed by Agent Wright, who reveals she is a double agent. Wright tortures Scott for the Switchblade’s activation codes. Scott activates the contact lens gadget, allowing Robinson to see the dilemma as he battles his opponent in the ring. Robinson gets knocked down for the first time in his career, but recovers, defeats his opponent, and departs for the bridge. Robinson sets off a firefight which kills many of the terrorists. After Carlos lands in a parachute, Robinson infers that Carlos is also corrupt. When Carlos provokes Kelly, he knocks him out, scattering the terrorists for them to take cover. Robinson takes out the remaining terrorists, while their leader, Zhu Tam, and Gundars are both killed by Wright. After the bomb on the plane is destroyed, Robinson tells Rachel to put the gun down. Wright makes up a lie that the BNS suspected that Carlos was corrupt and says that they pretended to team up with Carlos so they can catch him and uses this to convince the others that she is innocent. The confusion leads to a fight between Scott and Carlos, allowing Wright to escape with Gundars’ briefcase. Scott and Robinson attempt to fly the Switchblade away, but it crashes into the river. While in the water, Robinson discovers the nuclear weapon. Scott realizes the mission is a success after all, and Robinson remarks that he will be recognized as a hero.

Later in Monte Carlo, Scott and Robinson track down Agent Wright and place her under arrest. Scott turns up a copy of USA Today and sees a picture of Carlos in a parade with President Bush. Robinson takes this news hard, and refuses to accompany Scott to BNS headquarters for a mission debrief. Scott tells Robinson the agency has perfected a jelly-like substance that will allow its wearer to float through the air. Robinson happily agrees to go, and Scott tells another agent to retrieve some jars of jelly and two parachutes.Overall this was kinda overlooked at the UK box office and I think it was because it was very slight and flimsy. However for gentle laughs based on good banter rather than set up jokes, this is a surprisingly fun comedy despite not sticking in your mind for longer than 15 minutes after you watch it.

When he takes his family to Far Far Away to celebrate his children’s first birthday, a series of mishaps further injure his ego, causing him to lose his temper and walk out in anger. Shrek encounters Rumpelstiltskin, who seizes his chance, having observed Shrek’s angry outburst. He follows Shrek and arranges for Shrek to appear to save his life. To “thank” him, he gives Shrek a day to live like a real ogre, in exchange for a day from his childhood that he would not remember being erased.
MV5BMjA3MTYxMzk5OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjM2NjY0Mw@@._V1_SX1777_CR0,0,1777,754_AL_Shrek signs the contract and appears in a reality where he is feared by villagers. He takes the opportunity to cause some lighthearted mischief until he finds “WANTED” posters for Fiona and his home deserted and desolate. He is kidnapped by witches and taken to Rumpelstiltskin, now the King of Far Far Away, which has become derelict and run down. Upon inquiry, Rumpelstiltskin reveals that the day he erased was the day of Shrek’s birth. Therefore, Shrek never saved Fiona, never met Donkey, and consequently Rumpelstiltskin was able to get King Harold and Queen Lillian to sign their kingdom away, making them both disappear. When the day ends, Shrek will disappear as well. Shrek escapes Rumpelstiltskin’s castle with Donkey. Initially terrified of Shrek, Donkey decides to trust him after seeing Shrek cry over his erased history, something he had never seen an ogre do before. After Shrek explains the situation, Donkey helps him find a hidden exit clause: the contract can be nullified by true love’s kiss.

The ogres are led by a still-cursed Fiona who, after escaping from the tower where she was held captive, keeps the retired and overweight Puss in Boots as a pet. Shrek does everything he can to gain Fiona’s love, but she is too busy preparing an ambush on Rumpelstiltskin. She is also bitterly cynical and disillusioned about the power of true love and throws herself into planning Rumpelstiltskin’s capture. While sparring with her, Fiona begins to like Shrek, but stops short of kissing him. Puss encourages him to continue pursuing Fiona.

When he hears that Rumpelstiltskin is offering the “deal of a lifetime” (where all wishes come true) to the one who brings him Shrek, Shrek turns himself in and uses the deal to free the other ogres, who then storm into the castle, battle the witches, and capture Rumpelstiltskin.

And it was a really great and enjoyable short, with wonderful animation especially with the waterfall and effects that really draw you into what’s going on especially Donkey sneezing and the spiders. The music is driven and memorable, the plot is simple but engaging and the jokes are very funny and well written, with the part at the start of the short in the torture chamber a riot and the dialogue always witty and amusing. The characters are just as likable as in the movie, especially Donkey and Gingerbread, and the voice work especially from Eddie Murphy is full of energy.

At first, Fiona is thrilled to be rescued but is quickly disappointed when Shrek reveals he is an ogre.

Shrek and Donkey stargaze while Shrek tells stories about great ogres and says that he will build a wall around his swamp when he returns. When Donkey persistently asks why, he says that everyone judges him before knowing him; therefore, he feels he is better off alone, despite Donkey’s admission that he did not immediately judge him when they met.

The trio is almost at Duloc, and that night Fiona shelters in a windmill. When Donkey hears strange noises coming from it, he finds Fiona turned into an ogre. She explains her childhood curse and transforms each night, which is why she was locked away, and that only her true love’s kiss will return her to her “love’s true form”. Shrek, about to confess his feelings for Fiona with a sunflower, partly overhears them, and is heartbroken as he mistakes her disgust with her transformation to an “ugly beast” as disgust with him. Fiona makes Donkey promise not to tell Shrek, vowing to do it herself. The next morning, Shrek has brought Lord Farquaad to Fiona. Furious at Shrek, Donkey comes to the swamp where Shrek says he overheard Donkey and Fiona’s conversation. Donkey keeps his promise to Fiona and tells Shrek that she was talking about someone else. Outraged by Fiona, Farquaad orders Shrek killed and Fiona detained. Shrek whistles for Dragon who bursts in along with Donkey and devours Farquaad. Shrek and Fiona profess their love and share a kiss; Fiona is bathed in light as her curse is broken but is surprised that she is still an ogre, as she thought she would become beautiful, to which Shrek replies that she is beautiful. The creators at DreamWorks Studios brush up on an old fairytale premise of a hero saving the damsel in distress from the dragon’s keep with intelligent, deft strokes. The result is a meticulously animated, hilarious, heartwarming fluff of a film.

Backstage at an amateur talent show at the Detroit Theatre in 1961, young car salesman Curtis Taylor Jr. meets a girl group known as “The Dreamettes”: lead singer Effie White and back-up singers Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson. Curtis presents himself as The Dreamettes’ new manager and arranges for The Dreamettes to become backup singers for popular R&B singer Jimmy ‘Thunder’ Early.

Curtis soon starts his own record label, Rainbow Records, out of his Detroit car dealership, and appoints Effie’s brother C.C as his head songwriter. When their first single fails after another pop group releases a cover version, Curtis, C.C, and their producer Wayne turn to payola to make Jimmy and The Dreamettes pop stars. Offstage, Effie becomes infatuated with Curtis, while the married Jimmy begins an affair with Lorrell.
Jimmy’s manager Marty grows weary of Curits’ plans to make his client more pop-friendly and walks out. When Jimmy bombs in front of a Miami Beach audience, Curtis sends Jimmy out on the road alone, keeping The Dreamettes behind to headline in his place. Feeling that Effie’s curvy figure and distinctive voice will not attract audiences, Curtis appoints the slimmer and higher-voiced Deena lead singer and renames the group ” Deena Jones and the Dreams”.
With the aid of new songs and a new more glamorous image, Curtis and Marty transform The Dreams into a top selling mainstream pop group. However, Effie begins acting out, particularly when Curtis’ affections also turn towards Deena. Curtis eventually drops Effie (who has just learned she is pregnant with Curtis’ child) from the group, hiring Michelle Morris, a young intern, to take her place, which Effie finds out before anyone can tell her. Despite Effie’s defiance at being ousted, and her last-ditch appeal to Curtis, he, C.C., and The Dreams leave her behind and forge ahead to stardom.
Effie has now become an impoverished welfare mother, living in inner-city Detroit with her daughter, Magic, and struggling to return to music. One day, Marty appeals to Effie to let him help her rebuild her career and compels her to use her struggles as motivation in her music. Meanwhile, Rainbow Records has moved to Los Angeles, where The Dreams have become superstars. With Rainbow the biggest pop business in the country, Curtis is now attempting to move into film production with a film about Cleopatra starring an unwilling Deena, who is now his wife. Meanwhile, Jimmy Early has descended into drug addiction, his career neglected due to Curtis’ preoccupation with Deena. When Early has a breakdown onstage at Rainbow’s tenth anniversary TV special the following year, dropping his pants in front of the audience and live TV cameras, Curtis drops him from the label, and Lorrell ends their long affair. Later, Jimmy is found dead in a hotel room from a heroin overdose.
Angered over Curtis increasing control and remixing over his music for a new sound, and his lack of sympathy upon learning of Jimmy’s death in which Curtis calls it a “bad bad scene” after watching it on a breaking news bulletin, C.C quits and returns to Detroit to find Effie, who has been rebuilding her music career with Marty as her new manager. The two siblings reconcile, C.C meets his niece Magic for the first time and he writes and produces Effie’s comeback single, “One Night Only”. Just as the record begins gaining radio play in Detroit and climbs the charts, Curtis becomes furious when he learns about C.C helping Effie out in rebuilding her career. Out of desperation and spite, he uses payola to force radio stations to play a disco cover of “One Night Only” by The Dreams instead. His plan falls apart when Deena, angry over Curtis’ control of her career, finds evidence of his payola schemes and contacts Effie and C.C, who arrive in Los Angeles with Marty and a lawyer.
Deena and Effie reconcile, while Curtis, wanting to avoid being reported to the FBI for payola, agrees to give Effie’s record national distribution. Inspired by Effie’s victory, Deena leaves Curtis to make it on her own.
As a result, The Dreams give a farewell performance at the Detroit Theater. At the conclusion of the concert, Deena invites Effie to join the group onstage and sing lead for the final performance of the group’s signature song, “Dreamgirls.” As the concert ends, Curtis notices Magic in the front row, walks down the aisle, stands next to her without speaking and realizes that he is her father.
An absolutely wonderful movie with great music and performances. Jennifer Hudson is incredible
