Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Sisters (2015)Maura Ellis (Amy Poehler) is told by her parents (Dianne Wiest and James Brolin) that they are planning to sell their home in Orlando, and asked to come and clean out the things from her childhood bedroom. Her parents also ask that she tell her sister, Kate (Tina Fey), because she does not take bad news well.Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Sisters (2015)Maura, a recently divorced nurse, is constantly trying to help people, and Kate is an unorganized and irresponsible stylist, who is living in her friend’s house, while her teenage daughter, Haley (Madison Davenport), lives elsewhere and refuses to tell Kate where she is staying. Maura calls to tell her the news, but stops short of telling Kate that their childhood home is being sold, and instead convinces her to come to Orlando for a while, as Kate has just been kicked out of her apartment. Kate and Maura meet at the airport, and on the drive home, they hit on a man, James (Ike Barinholtz), doing yard work outside of his home.Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Sisters (2015)Upon reaching their childhood home, they discover the house has already sold, and their parents have already packed up and sold all of the family’s belongings, except for the things in the sisters’ room. Furious, Maura and Kate find their parents and confront them. The sisters are told that the deal is done and that they need to be out of the house by the end of the weekend with everything completely moved out. As they are going to sleep, Kate convinces Maura to have one last party in their childhood home.Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Sisters (2015)The next morning, the sisters are awakened by the new homeowners coming to see the house in order to begin to plan all of the things they want to change when to move in, and tell them that the home needs to be in perfect condition in order for the sale to go through, causing great distress to Maura and Kate. Moving forward with their plans to host a party, Kate and Maura go through and invite most of their friends from high school, excluding Brinda (Maya Rudolph) whom Kate hates.151583_bbThe sisters go shopping in order to prepare for the night. While shopping for decorations, they have a run-in with Brinda, who is upset about not being invited. The sisters then go to a nail salon, where Maura invites her nail stylist to the party, and tries to convince Kate to apply for a job there. Kate speaks to the owner and he refuses. Kate convinces him to pretend to give her a job so that Maura will think that she is taking responsibility. While shopping for dresses, Haley calls Kate to check in with her. Kate hands the phone to Maura, whose conversation with Haley reveals that Maura has been housing Haley for the past several months, unbeknownst to Kate. Maura convinces Haley that Kate has changed for the better, and Haley buys a plane ticket to Orlando to surprise Kate. The sisters finish up their shopping, and stop by James’ house where Kate forces Maura to ask him to come to their party, and he agrees. While preparing for their guests to arrive, Maura asks Kate to remain sober for the party, so that she will be able to enjoy the party. Kate reluctantly agrees.sisters4As the party begins, the sisters realize that all of their high school classmates have matured and do not want a wild party. To prevent the guests from leaving, they give a speech to their guests and ask Dave (John Leguizamo) to invite his drug dealer Pazuzu (John Cena) over so they can buy marijuana. More of their friends show up, including their nail stylists, who are able to turn the party around into the epic celebration they were hoping for. Brinda arrives uninvited, where she is promptly kicked out by Kate. James also arrives, and he and Maura try to start a conversation together, but keep getting interrupted by the party guests.sisters-scene4As revenge, Brinda calls in a noise complaint to the police, though Kate and Maura are able to flirt and talk their way out of trouble. As the night progresses, the guests become more and more out of control. After failing to stop the party, Brinda takes revenge by adding blue paint to the water system for the pool and sprinklers. Haley calls her mom to surprise her about being in town, when she learns that her mom is at a party. Haley lashes out at her mother for continuing to be irresponsible, refusing to believe that Kate is sober. Kate decides to drink since Haley already suspects she is drinking.e8c3725cd92e6b57bc44840fab1a9fc7With Kate no longer watching over, the party continues to become increasingly destructive. Brinda again sneaks in, but this time, she and Kate are able to resolve their conflicts and she is allowed to stay. Meanwhile, Maura has snuck off with James, hoping to having sex with him, but things keep going awry, with Maura falling through the ceiling, and later, James landing on her childhood ballerina music box. James leaves the party with the music box up his rectum. Kate learns from her parents that they were planning to give her a portion of the money they receive from selling the house, so that she can get set up in her new life. Kate realizes that the house will no longer sell because of the destruction and tries to end the party early. She calls the police to complain about the noise, but the responding officer realizes that Maura had helped his cousin in high school, and declines to shut it down.sisters_movie_poster1After failing to have sex with James, Maura leaves her room and is horrified to see the mess that the party made. Maura learns that Kate has gotten drunk, despite promising to not have alcohol, and becomes furious with her. At the same time, Kate learns that Maura has been housing Haley, and is incensed. The sisters find each other and begin to fight. Haley and her grandparents show up at the party and are horrified by what they see. Kate has failed to park the car, therefore causing the car to roll into the tree seat destroying it, and knocking over the tree, destroying part of the house. The backyard pool becomes a sinkhole, and Haley falls in. Kate comes to her rescue and helps her get out when Haley refuses to climb a ladder. Once the parents kick the guests out, they tell Kate and Maura that they are tired of taking care of both of them, and that they need to get their lives together.sisters20153The next morning, the sisters are awakened by their parents so that they can begin the process of cleaning up after the party. Maura offers to help pay for the house, so that her parents will not have an issue with selling, but they refuse, as they believe that Maura needs to stop helping since she is often unhelpful. Kate tells her parents that she does not have a home, and would like to live in the house. They refuse this as well, saying that she can stay for the next two weeks while she repairs the house. Kate enlists the help of James to help repair the damage. Maura and Kate apologize to each other, and Kate convinces Maura to try and connect with James. Kate fixes up the house, and they are able to sell it with the help of Brinda. Kate opens a new nail salon in Orlando, and Maura and James have moved forward and are now in a relationship. The movie closes with Kate and Maura celebrating their first Christmas at their parents’ new home with all of the family happy together.Sisters-Kate-and-Maura-sisters-2015-39044234-1366-768I’m sorry reviewers but it was freaking hilarious and a funniest movie I have seen in a while. Clint Eastwood in The Mule (2018)Earl Stone, in his 80s, is an award-winning horticulturist and Korean War veteran in Peoria, Illinois. He is facing financial ruin and is estranged from his ex-wife Mary and daughter Iris for always putting work before family. He is still on friendly terms with his granddaughter Ginny and attends her wedding rehearsal. Desperate for money, he takes up an offer from the friend of one of Ginny’s bridesmaids and becomes a “mule” transporting cocaine through Illinois for a Mexican drug cartel. Facing little suspicion due to his age, race, spotless criminal history, and strict adherence to driving laws, Earl is soon trusted with huge amounts of drugs and is paid large amounts of cash. With the money he buys a new truck, settles his financial problems, and pays for renovations of the local VFW Post, as well as his granddaughter’s wedding and education. He becomes friendly with the cartel members, who call him “Tata” (grandfather).Bradley Cooper in The Mule (2018)Meanwhile, with details from an informant, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task force is narrowing in on the cartel’s deliveries to Chicago. Tensions within the cartel erupt when Gustavo, a power-hungry cartel lieutenant, assassinates cartel boss Laton, and subsequently demands Earl be kept under tighter control. In the middle of a $12 million cocaine shipment, Earl learns that Mary is gravely ill. After Ginny talks some sense into him, he postpones the drug delivery to make peace with Mary and stays by her side until she dies peacefully days later. After the funeral and after finally reconciling with his family, Earl resumes the delivery as both the DEA and the cartel close in on him.Clint Eastwood and Ignacio Serricchio in The Mule (2018)The cartel’s enforcers catch him and, upon discovering he was away to attend his wife’s death and funeral (which they respect), call the cartel leader to request leniency. The cartel underboss allows him to continue, with the caveat that if anything went wrong it would be on the enforcer’s head. Next we see Earl driving with a head injury and blood on his face. As he makes his way towards the drop point, almost resignedly as a helicopter is circling overhead, he slows to a halt to allow the DEA agents to arrest him. In court, disregarding his age as an excuse and guilt-ridden over his crimes and for failing his family, Earl pleads guilty to all charges and is sent to federal prison with his family showing him their support. In prison, he returns to horticulture.Clint Eastwood in The Mule (2018)Dont expect action packed. This is raw and real crime drama. There are some beautiful moments and always a strong moral. Definitely a must see!

25 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS REVIEW: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

CAST
Johnny Depp (Public Enemies)
Winona Ryder (Black Swan)
Dianne Wiest (The Lost Boys)
Anthony Michael Hall (The Dark Knight)
Kathy Baker (13 Going on 30)
Conchata Ferrell (Two and A Half Men)
Vincent Price (The Fly)
Alan Arkin (Argo)
Marc Macaulay (Swamp Thing: The Series)
An elderly woman tells her granddaughter a bedtime story of where snow comes from, by telling her the story of a young man named Edward who has scissors for hands. As the creation of an old Inventor, Edward was a human-like boy who had everything except for hands. The Inventor suffered a fatal heart attack and died before he could give real hands to Edward.
Local Avon saleswoman Peg Boggs visits the decrepit Gothic mansion on the hill where Edward lives. She finds Edward alone. She is at first startled, but, upon realizing he means well and is virtually harmless, takes him to her home. Edward becomes friends with Peg’s young son Kevin and her husband Bill. He later falls in love with the Boggs’ beautiful teenage daughter Kim, despite her initial fear of him.
Peg’s neighbors are impressed by Edward’s adept hedge-trimming and hair-cutting skills, though an eccentric religious fanatic named Esmeralda and Kim’s overbearing boyfriend Jim are fearful and contemptuous of him. Joyce, an ageing, unfaithful housewife in the Boggs’ neighborhood, has become fascinated with Edward and suggests that Edward open a hair-cutting salon with her. While examining a proposed site, she attempts to seduce him in the back room, causing Edward to leave in a panic.
Wanting money for a van, Jim takes advantage of Edward’s ability to pick locks to break into his parents’ house to steal from his wealthy but bullying father. The burglar alarm sounds and everyone except Edward flees after he is trapped by the automatic locks triggered by the alarm, despite Kim’s insistence that they return for him. Edward is arrested and released when a psychological examination reveals that his isolation allowed him to live without a sense of reality and common sense. Upon questioning by Peg, Edward takes full blame for the robbery. Infuriated by Edward’s rejection, Joyce claims that he had tried to rape her. During the Christmas season, Edward is feared and cast out by almost everyone except the Boggs family. When Edward returns home he reveals that he knew it was Jim’s house they were trying to rob and that he did it because Jim asked him to, much to Kim’s shock. This in turn causes Kim to show a sour demeanor towards Jim.
While the family is setting up Christmas decorations, Edward creates a large angel ice sculpture (modelled on Kim). The shavings create an effect of falling snow, which Kim dances under. Jim arrives and calls out to Edward, startling him, resulting in Edward accidentally cutting Kim’s hand. Jim accuses Edward of intentionally harming her and attacks him. Edward runs away, wandering the neighborhood in a rage. Kim, fed up with Jim’s behavior towards Edward, breaks up with him, and he goes to his friend’s van to get drunk. While Peg and Bill search for Edward, he returns and finds Kim alone in the Boggs’ house. She asks Edward to hold her, but he is afraid that he will hurt her. She pulls his arms around her and they embrace. Jim returns to the Boggs’ house in a drunken rage to confront Kim, forcing his friend to drive his van while inebriated. Kevin is almost run over, but Edward pushes him out of the way, cutting Kevin’s arms and face, causing witnesses to think he is attacking him. When the police arrive, Edward flees to his hilltop mansion as the neighbors pursue. Kim runs to the mansion, reuniting with Edward. Jim follows her and attacks them with a handgun, beating Edward severely, who refuses to fight until Jim strikes Kim across the face when she intervenes. Edward stabs Jim in the stomach, causing him to fall out a window to his death. Kim confesses her love for Edward and they share a kiss before saying goodbye. Kim tells the townspeople that Edward and Jim fought each other to death and tells them that the roof caved in on Edward, showing them a discarded scissor-hand from the Inventor’s lab. The neighbors return home with Joyce feeling guilty for framing Edward being the one causing the neighbors to hate Edward.
The elderly woman, revealed to be Kim herself, finishes telling her granddaughter the story, saying that she never saw Edward again. She chose not to visit him because she wanted him to remember her the way she was in her youth. She believes that Edward is still alive, seemingly immortal since he can never age. It is revealed that Edward creates the town’s snow by carving ice sculptures that scatter shavings over the neighborhood.

Kiefer Sutherland, Brooke McCarter, Alex Winter, and Billy Wirth in The Lost Boys (1987)Brothers Michael and Sam Emerson travel with their recently divorced mother, Lucy to the small beach town of Santa Carla, California to live with her eccentric father. Michael and Sam begin hanging out at the boardwalk, which is plastered with flyers of missing people, while Lucy gets a job at a video store run by a local bachelor, Max. Michael becomes fascinated by Star, a young woman he spots on the boardwalk, though she seems to be in a relationship with the mysterious David, the leader of a young biker gang. In the local comic book store, Sam meets brothers Edgar and Alan Frog, a pair of self-proclaimed vampire hunters, who give him horror comics to teach him about the threat they claim has infiltrated the town.Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Brooke McCarter, and Alex Winter in The Lost Boys (1987)Michael finally talks to Star and is approached by David, who goads him into following them by motorcycle along the beach until they reach a dangerous cliff, which Michael almost goes over. At the gang’s hangout, a sunken luxury hotel beneath the cliff, David initiates Michael into the group. Star warns Michael not to drink from an offered bottle, telling him it’s blood, but Michael ignores her advice. Later on, David and the others, including Michael, head to a railroad bridge where they hang off the edge over a foggy gorge; one by one they fall, Michael falling after them.Corey Feldman, Jami Gertz, Jason Patric, and Jamison Newlander in The Lost Boys (1987)Michael wakes up at home the next day unaware of how he got there. His eyes are sensitive to sunlight and he develops a sudden thirst for blood, which leads him to impulsively attack Sam. Sam’s dog, Nanook, retaliates, and Sam realizes that Michael is turning into a vampire by his brother’s semi-transparent reflection. Sam is initially terrified of his brother but Michael convinces him that he is not yet a vampire and that he desperately needs his help. Michael begins to develop supernatural powers and asks Star for help, but has sex with her shortly afterwards. Sam deduces that, since Michael has not killed anyone, he is a half-vampire and his condition can be reversed upon the death of the head vampire. Sam and the Frog brothers test whether Max is the head vampire during a date with Lucy, but Max passes every test and the boys decide to focus on David.Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and Jamison Newlander in The Lost Boys (1987)To provoke him into killing, David takes Michael to stalk a group of beach goers, and instigates a feeding frenzy. Horrified, Michael escapes and returns home to Sam. Star arrives, and reveals herself as a half-vampire who is looking to be cured. It emerges that David had intended for Michael to be Star’s first kill, sealing her fate as a vampire. The next day, a weakening Michael leads Sam and the Frog brothers to the gang’s lair. They impale one of the vampires, Marko, with a stake, awakening David and the two others, but the boys escape, rescuing Star and Laddie, a half-vampire child and Star’s companion.Jami Gertz and Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys (1987)That evening while Lucy is on a date with Max and the grandfather is out of the house, the teens arm themselves with holy-water-filled water guns, a longbow, and stakes, barricading themselves in the house. When night falls, David’s gang attack the house. The Frog brothers and Nanook manage to kill one of the vampires by pushing him into a bathtub filled with garlic and holy water, dissolving him to the bone. Sam is attacked by Dwayne, another vampire, and shoots an arrow through his heart and into the stereo behind him, electrocuting him and causing parts of his body to explode. Michael is then attacked by David, forcing him to use his vampire powers. He manages to overpower David and impales him on a set of antlers. However, Michael, Star and Laddie do not transform back to normal as they had hoped. Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys (1987)Lucy then returns home with Max, who is revealed to be the head vampire. He informs the boys that to invite a vampire into one’s house renders one powerless, explaining why their earlier assumption appeared to be incorrect. Max’s objective had been to get Lucy to be a mother for his lost boys. As Max pulls Lucy to him, preparing to transform her, he is killed when Grandpa crashes his jeep through the wall of the house and impales Max on a wooden fence post, causing him to explode. Michael, Star and Laddie then return to normal. Amongst this carnage and debris, Grandpa casually retrieves a drink from the refrigerator, and declares: “One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach: all the damn vampires”.Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and Jamison Newlander in The Lost Boys (1987)The Lost Boys is one of the best and the greatest vampire flick’s ever made! A true Schumacher masterpiece and a classic horror film!

Dan Burns is a newspaper advice columnist, a widower, and single-parent to his three girls. The family takes a trip to the rambling, Rhode Island home of his parents for an annual family gathering. Also in attendance are Dan’s sister and brother with their families and Dan’s younger brother Mitch.
The morning after their arrival, Dan meets Marie in a bookshop. They share a muffin and a heart-felt chat, although Marie gently warns Dan that she has a boyfriend. Dan returns to his parents’ house and announces that he has ‘met someone’. Brother Mitch introduces his new girlfriend Annie. Lo and behold, Dan’s Marie is Mitch’s Annie. Dan is disheartened and resists his father’s relationship advice about finding someone of his own.
Dan reluctantly agrees to a foursome dinner with their once unattractive childhood friend, “pig-faced” Ruthie. Marie jealously watches Dan and Ruthie. The next morning, Dan endures her ‘punishment’ for his late night with Ruthie by eating the burnt pancakes which she serves him. Marie and Dan meet to talk at a bowling alley. The meeting evolves into a date and finally a passionate kiss, but unfortunately Dan’s entire family arrives to bowl. Mitch punches Dan in the face, and Marie hurries out
The plot resolves with Dan and his daughters going to New York City, where they finally find Marie at her gym. As he makes eye contact with her, Dan, in voice-over, tells the readers of his advice column that instead of merely planning ahead in life, they should “plan to be surprised”. The film ends with Dan and Marie celebrating their wedding at his parents’ Rhode Island home, and Mitch happily dancing with Ruthie.Dan in Real Life is a great film, a fantastic escape from the redundancy of offensive and dumbed-down comedies. The quality of the writing, directing, acting, and (especially) cinematography is excellent. It is simply a beautiful, light-hearted comedy.

REVIEW: DRUNKS

CAST

Faye Dunaway (Supergirl)
Calista Flockhart (Supergirl TV)
Richard Lewis (Leaving Las Vegas)
Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2)
Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction)
Kevin Corrigan (Pineapple Express)
Parker Posey (Blade: Trinity)
Lisa Gay Hamilton (Jackie Brown)
Dianne Wiest (I Am Sam)

An inside peek at the goings-on of an unusually attractive Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Richard Lewis’s character exists to provide a moral center for the film as it examines his desperate efforts to stay sober. The various members of the AA group provide different glimpses at what contributes to alcoholism and demonstrate that there is no one profile for what constitutes a drunk.

There are very nice performances in this film, particularly those of a pre-Ally McBeal Calista Flockhart and Parker Posey. The film’s scene stealer and the most memorable drunk of all, however, is monologuist Spalding Grey, doing a hilarious turn as a church choir member who shows up at the wrong church. In the midst of explaining his blunder to the group he rhapsodizes brilliantly on the importance of Guinness in his life and discovers quietly that gee, maybe he too has a drinking problem.

Overall the individual performances divert attention from the main storyline and provide more of a center for the film than Lewis, whose story is ultimately uninteresting. But check it out for a young Calista Flockhart.
