Christina Applegate in The Book of Life (2014)Mary Beth, a museum tour guide, takes a group of school detention students on a secret museum tour, telling them, with wooden figures, the story of a Mexican town called San Angel from the Book of Life, holding every story in the world.Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, and Channing Tatum in The Book of Life (2014)On the Day of the Dead, La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, see Manolo Sánchez and Joaquín Mondragon competing over María Posada. They strike a wager: if María marries Manolo, Xibalba will no longer interfere in mortal affairs, but if she marries Joaquín, La Muerte and Xibalba will swap realms. However, Xibalba cheats by giving Joaquín his Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants the wearer invincibility.Ron Perlman and Kate del Castillo in The Book of Life (2014)Years later, Joaquín has become a hero with the Medal’s aid, but Manolo’s musical aspirations are suppressed by his father Carlos, who trains him to be a bullfighter in their family tradition. At Manolo’s first bullfight he defeats the bull but refuses to kill it, dismaying Carlos and the crowd but impressing María. That night, María is pressured by her father and mayor, General Ramiro Posada, to marry Joaquín for his protection from the Bandit King Chakal. María and Manolo both profess their love before dawn but are interrupted when Xibalba sends his dual-headed snake staff, who bites her and sends her into a coma. Devastated by María’s apparent death, Manolo allows Xibalba to kill him, believing he will be reunited with María in death.Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana in The Book of Life (2014)In the Land of the Remembered, Manolo reunites with his mother and his ancestral family. They travel to La Muerte’s castle, discovering Xibalba, now the ruler of the realm, who explains the bet. Manolo travels to the Cave of Souls to reach La Muerte. Inside, he meets the Candle Maker, the overseer of mortal lives and the Book of Life’s keeper. The Candle Maker sees that Manolo’s story in the Book of Life is blank and can be rewritten by himself, so he takes them to the Land of the Forgotten. They find La Muerte at Xibalba’s castle and expose his cheating. Furious, La Muerte lectures Xibalba before offering a new wager at Manolo’s request: Manolo’s life will be returned if he completes a challenge of Xibalba’s choosing, but if he fails, he will be forgotten and Xibalba will keep both realms. Xibalba sets Manolo against a giant bull skeleton made from the skeletons of every bull slain by the Sanchez family, believing that to be his greatest fear.Zoe Saldana in The Book of Life (2014)Meanwhile, María had been awaken from her coma, learns of Manolo’s death, and accepts Joaquín’s proposal. Their wedding is interrupted by Chakal, who leads his army to San Angel to find the Medal, which was previously his. Chakal kills Carlos, who arrives in the Land of the Remembered in time to see Manolo’s fight. Manolo, realizing his fear is actually of being himself, refuses to fight and instead sings an apology to the bull, appeasing it and touching everyone present. Impressed, the deities resurrect Manolo and send him and his family to San Angel to protect it. Manolo is knocked unconscious when Chakal destructs himself, but he is protected by the Medal, which Joaquín had slipped him earlier. Joaquín returns it to Xibalba and resolves to be a true hero, while Manolo and María are happily married as Xibalba and La Muerte reconcile.Diego Luna in The Book of Life (2014)In the present, Mary Beth finishes the story, and the amazed children leave the museum. Mary Beth and a security guard reveal themselves to be La Muerte and Xibalba in disguise. The Candle Maker appears and encourages the audience to write their own story.Zoe Saldana in The Book of Life (2014)This is a beautiful animated film. Very unique in comparison to other animated films out there. I loved that it had funny parts – for adults as well as kids – but it isn’t a silly comedy. It is a gorgeous, epic folkloric tale of family, tradition and finding your own way.  It felt very genuine and warm throughout but the sweet romantic story was especially touching. You could tell a lot of love went into making this film.

We open with two greedy gravediggers who get sliced up by an unseen presence before delving into the 5-minute credits sequence. Then we witness a tipped-over van, out of which fall a collection of slimy convicts and one extra-jiggly female guard. The group promptly decides to wander off into a surprisingly verdant desert wasteland, whereupon they come across a mumbling Danny Trejo. Vulgarities are exchanged, and then the convict crew (and busty broad) wanders off into the desert again, only to arrive at an authentic-style Old West town, complete with booze, whores, and  a bunch of lame-looking zombies who pop out once the sun goes down. And then it’s just a bunch of aimless meandering and tons of insipid dialogue before the flick winds down with an amusingly inept finale. A movie that wanted to be a From Dusk Till Dawn-style genre stew is, instead, a painfully inert, agressively silly, and absolutely dreary concoction. It’s a dumb story populated by obnoxious characters who do moronic things. Often.Noel-in-7-Mummies-noel-gugliemi-24693975-853-480First-time director Nick Quested makes all sorts of embarrassing mistakes: He allows his annoyingly incongruous rock & rap tunes to simply blare over the dialogue, the lighting on the flick is consistently insufficient, and there’s way too many redundant (not to mention pointless) fade-ins, fade-overs, and stutter-step editing gimmicks. And don’t even get me started on the horrific screenplay.B-movie fanatics will no doubt see a cast list that includes Cerina Vincent, Danny Trejo, Martin Kove, and Billy Drago, and get a few charitable thoughts in their head. Ignore those feelings and simply rent something else. Trust me. Cerina Vincent was the only reason I bought this, being a fan of hers ever since her Lost Galaxy days.

HALLOWEEN OF HORROR REVIEW: DEAD AGAIN IN TOMBSTONE

CAST

Danny Trejo (Machete)
Jake Busey (Starship Troopers)
Elysia Rotaru (Arrow)
Dean McDermott (Open Range)
Nathaniel Arcand (Pathfinder)
Elizabeth Lavender (I Dream of Murder)

Danny Trejo in Dead Again in Tombstone (2017)Dead Again In Tombstone revolves around Guerrero (Danny Trejo), a good old-fashioned western outlaw who has sold his soul to the devil and is in Satan’s service forever. After finally returning home to visit his estranged family Guerrero is confronted by Colonel Jackson Boomer (Jake Busey), a disgraced Confederate general and his crew who have escaped persecution from the Union after the conclusion of the Civil War. Colonel Boomer demands that Guerrero hand over a relic that his brother once spoke of, an item that will grant Boomer power, vitality, and will probably, also, bring on the end of the world.5_zpsd5899103_jpgoriginalIt probably goes without saying that Dead Again In Tombstone is exactly the kind of Danny Trejo film that we have come to expect; an independent, lower-budgeted film, that survives mostly thanks to that reliable Trejo. Dead Again In Tombstone is the kind of film that knows exactly what kind of film it is and does not try to reinvent the wheel as its only purpose is to entertain. Zombie animals, an unshootable book, ridiculous villains, and of course Danny Trejo greatness all feature, but none of that stands in the way of Dead Again In Tombstone’s goal to entertain.dead-again-in-tombstone-2017-elysia-rotaruThere are also several aspects of the film that deserve mentioning such as the use of practical effects (as opposed to CGI) and the highly choreographed shootout scenes that happen throughout the film. Of course, since Dead Again in Tombstone is a western there has to be at least one shootout, but a major battle in the middle of the film took me completely off guard as I was not expecting a drawn-out camera shot of choreographed movements and actors with blood packs falling from decks and off railings after being shot. Not only did it make the scene smooth and pleasant, but I was actually able to relish it instead of pointing out ridiculous CGI blood or the unrealistic flashbang from the end of small caliber guns. The effect that was placed into this particular scene as well as other fighting scenes that included similar aspects was commendable and added enjoyment to the film. Along the same vein as the SFX and choreographed scenes was the camera work which was, quite simply, breathtaking. There were consistently lovely shots of the wilderness landscape around the town where everything took place and even some exaggerated shots of characters to convey nonverbal clues were well-executed and enjoyable.Dead Again In TombstoneThere is one shot of Colonel Boomer entering a saloon where he is not welcomed and the camera is at a slightly lower angle, to showcase Boomer’s silhouette as it overtakes the doorway,  that feels oppressive to the viewer. The shot is then slowed down and paired with more camera angles and lighting tricks to capture the sense of dread that is emanating from the other patrons of the saloon at the sight of a disgraced Confederate colonel. However, no amount of camerawork, choreo, and Danny Trejo can erase some of the lackluster performances given throughout the film. While Trejo is delivering lines like “I don’t need Satan’s power to shove this horn up your ass” the villain, Jake Busey, calls out to invoke the dead in a tone that is more appropriate for ordering a latte from Starbucks. Throughout Dead Again in Tombstone Busey is as inconsistent with his tone as he is with his southern accent and sometimes the only reason I knew he was angry or serious was from the menacing snarl he used.dead-in-tombstone-recensione-20857-1280x16Busey is not the only one that consistently under-delivers their lines, there is also blame to be placed at the feet of Guerrero’s estranged family who seem to have a knack for being either insanely passionate or, again, delivering lines like they are ordering pizza. But the worst offender of all is Madame Du Vere (Elizabeth Lavender) the madam of the local brothel who luckily does not play a major role in the proceedings until the final act of the movie. The Madam is anything but what a madam should be; she isn’t sultry, seductive, powerful, or commands respect, but instead she masquerades as an adorable fresh-faced lady who pretends to be evil with ridiculous lines. After looking at Lavender’s resume, I will lay most of the blame at the poor casting choice and the terrible dialogue that she was fed. Although I understood that she was the madam, none of the dialogue, movements, or scenes gave her the proper air, thus not giving her stable ground to convey the character. In any case, the madam is borderline unbearable.Dead Again In TombstoneYet, if you can forgive the cheesier components of Dead Again In Tombstone, some flaws in acting, and are okay with a plot that you have seen 1000 times before, then Dead Again In Tombstone is for you. It’s catering more for the casual horror watcher who likes the elements rather than the whole package or is a good family (teenagers not children) friendly movie that can be enjoyed for its cheesiness and action-packed plot.

HALLOWEEN OF HORROR REVIEW: DEAD IN TOMBSTONE

CAST

Danny Trejo (Machete)
Anthony Michael Hall (The Dark Knight)
Mickey Rourke (Sin City)
Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers)
Richard Dillane (Argo)

Dina Meyer and Danny Trejo in Dead in Tombstone (2013)In the Frontier of the Wild West, Red Cavanaugh is to be hanged for his crimes. Calm, he says that every man at the gallows will be dead before sunrise. Moments later, the Blackwater Gang – Baptiste, Darko, Ramos, Snake, and Washington – arrive led by his half-brother Guerrero De La Cruz. After slaughtering everyone and freeing Red, they retreat. The next morning, Red tells them about Edendale, Colorado, where gold ore is being stored in a bank until a mineral dispute can be settled. Guerrero agrees to steal it, so long as they avoid unnecessary deaths. After the seven rob the bank, Red betrays Guerrero, as he had acquired the deed to the mine and desires to take over the town. He shoots Guerrero, and despite Guerrero’s orders, Red convinces the rest of the gang to turn on him; they all shoot Guerrero to death.Dina Meyer in Dead in Tombstone (2013)Finding himself in Hell, Guerrero meets Lucifer, whom he had seen recently in his dreams. Guerrero bargains with him, to allow him to return to Earth and to kill his former gang, so that the fires of Hell can grow hotter than he alone can stoke with his flesh. Intrigued by this, Lucifer grants Guerrero 24 hours to slay all six of his betrayers or his soul will remain damned to Hell; Satan tells him that only Guerrero can kill the six, dissuading him from asking for help. Guerrero wakens one year to the day of his death and makes his way back to town now called “Tombstone” in his memory.Richard Dillane, Catalina Grama, and Miriam Rizea in Dead in Tombstone (2013)Ramos, shaken by an omen earlier, returns to his home and witnesses two of his farmhands killed before confronting Guerrero, whom he does not immediately recognize. After Guerrero puts together his guns, a feat only he and Red could accomplish, Ramos recognizes him, and he is shot to death. Taking his clothes, Guerrero has the local pastor set up six pine boxes as coffins and stations Ramos in one of them. The following morning, Baptiste and Darko discover Ramos and invade a nearby slaughterhouse. After a stand-off with Baptiste and his men, Guerrero kills Baptiste but realizes that he still bleeds like a mortal. Darko tells Red about the stranger killing them off, and he sends Washington to the mine to insure that the man protecting them from the law is paid off in full. The gang goes to the saloon where Guerrero is and a firefight ensues. After defeating them, Guerrero sees the former sheriff’s widow, Calathea, about to kill Red and stops her, but he is trampled by Red’s horse as he flees town. Waking sometime later, he explains to her and Father Paul about his situation. Showing him Darko’s dead body, whom he’d killed during the saloon brawl, Calathea agrees to help him, and the two make their way to the mine.MV5BMjE4MzYzMTE4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjc2NDc1MDE@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1503,1000_AL_In the mine, it is revealed that Judah Clark, a Marshall, is aiding Red and protecting Red for access to the gold. They leave Washington and Snake to finish off Guerrero, but he turns the tables and kills Washington as he and Calathea escape back to town with his body. After an intense chase, they return to town. In a stand-off, Guerrero kills Snake with a gunshot to the eye, but he is quickly shot down and Calathea is captured. Lucifer, still intrigued by Guerrero’s tenacity returns him to life with one hour remaining on his deadline. After a mob tries to kill Red, he takes Calathea captive and confronts his brother, who convinces him to a fair duel. Lucifer cheats with seconds remaining on the clock, and Red and Guerrero instead battle by hand. Guerrero gains the upper hand and kills Red, but two minutes after his time is up.5_zpsd5899103_jpgoriginalEntering the church, Lucifer informs Guerrero of his failure, but does not want to condemn him to Hell. Instead, he forces Guerrero to kill outlaws to pay off his debt. Now, with Edendale out of danger, Guerrero rides off into the countryside, looking for his next bounty to collect for Hell. dead-in-tombstone-recensione-20857-1280x16I am not a huge fan of westerns, so imagine my surprise when I deeply enjoyed this movie. The last western that i enjoyed was Tombstone and don’t get me wrong, this movie is no Tombstone but the camera work makes this movie visually enjoyable. Anthony Michael Hall played Red extremely convincingly and Mickey Rourke take as Satan was genuinely likable. Camera tricks, editing and sound made this movie enjoyable even though the plot was predictable. I also like that is was a new twist on the old revenge for death plots Westerns show. If you like movies with slick visual effects, then you will enjoy this. If your looking for great dialog and deep character development then you may want to save this one for a day you just want to be entertained.

14444786133A water-borne virus has led to a widespread outbreak of zombies in San Francisco. A group of survivors, including Dr. Lynn Snyder (Mariel Hemingway) and others, create a refuge on Alcatraz Island. Snyder receives communications from Dr. Arnold (French Stewart), a scientist conducting experiments to create a cure for the virus. Meanwhile, Dr. Dan Halpern (LeVar Burton), another of the refugees, is studying parts culled from the bodies of the zombies, but he is unable to make much headway because he only has access to ‘dead’ zombies. His research is further hindered when Caspian (Danny Trejo) and other refugees burn the zombie corpses being stored on the island.zombies27tvf-1-webA horde of zombies are washed onto the island by the tides, causing panic in the camp. While they are defeated, many of the refugees are killed, and two are infected by the virus, one of them being Halpern’s daughter, Julie (Kerisse Hutchinson). The survivors decide to set out for the mainland, while Halpern stays to study the two infected victims. Later in the film, Halpern is forced to kill himself by detonating a grenade when his daughter bites him, before the virus can claim him as well. The group on the mainland splits in two because of conflicting goals. Snyder wishes to find Dr. Arnold, as she believes he has found a cure, while Caspian’s group instead wants to find supplies and ultimately reach what they believe to be an evacuation point. Caspian and several others are soon infected, and the group’s numbers dwindle. It is eventually revealed that the ‘evacuation point’ has already been overrun by the zombies, rendering escape seemingly impossible. As the group siphones gas from a car, Ashley commits suicide on a trolly by rolling it down the street colliding with a bus.maxresdefaultThe last survivors of the group – Snyder, Kyle (Chad Lindberg) and Marshall (Ethan Suplee) – discover Dr. Arnold’s refuge, the water treatment plant where the outbreak began. Arnold reveals that he has indeed discovered a cure, based on his tests on animal subjects. As the five flee for a chopper on the roof of the plant, both Kyle and Marshall are attacked, but Arnold’s vaccine saves them. The group escapes the city, and Arnold requests a laboratory to manufacture his cure, expressing optimism that anything is possible.img_4355Rise of the Zombies is actually a good enough movie to watch for any zombie fans. It is nothing extraordinary or exceptional, but still worth a watch.

HALLOWEEN OF HORROR REVIEW: ZOMBIE HUNTER

CAST

Danny Trejo (Machete)
Martin Copping (The Dunes)
Claire Niederpruem (Vamp U)
Jason K. Wixon (The Legacy)
Terry Guthrie (Nowhere Safe)

The film opens with a news report on “Natas”, a strange drug which has been reported to induce zombie-like effects in those who consume it. The film then fast forwards in time, to an Earth mostly inhabited by zombies. The Hunter (Martin Copping) drives along a post-apocalyptic wasteland and meets a hostile “Death Angel”. The zombie is reduced to purplish goo after Hunter rams his car at it. He proceeds to stop at a deserted filling station to fill his car’s empty gas tank. Hunter enters the station’s convenience store to check out any available supplies, but is ambushed by invading zombies. He eliminates them all after a gory battle and downs his sorrows by gulping a bottle of tequila. It is revealed that Hunter’s daughter and wife have both died. Resuming his journey, Hunter unknowingly ventures into the turf of the survivors, who have not been infected by Natas. Thinking Hunter is a zombie, an unknown assailant takes a shot at him. Hunter survives nevertheless and is greeted by survivor Fast Lane Debbie (Jade Regier) upon regaining consciousness.A flirty Debbie attempts to make out with Hunter but fellow survivor Alison (Clare Niederpruem) awkwardly walks into the room to hand him a can of cola, before coercing an annoyed Debbie to leave Hunter alone. Outside, Debbie accuses Alison of being a slut. The latter woman throws back the same insult and they start to quarrel. The audience is then introduced to Father Jesús (Danny Trejo), a pastor-like zombie slayer and leader of the survivor’s colony. As the survivors assemble in a small room to have a meal together, a groggy Hunter joins the crowd and gets to formally know the other survivors. Alison and Hunter start to get romantically passionate with each other. All is well until a wave of normal zombies and a monstrously large zombie somehow make their way into the survivor’s camp. The survivors are able to fend off the normal zombies but the gigantic zombie is seemingly unstoppable to the point that even bullets do not faze it.Jesús rushes in to save them and is able to mutilate the hulking zombie with his axe by slicing off its arm. However, Jesús is unable to defeat him wholly and as a result, the zombie slices off his head. The remaining survivors scramble into a car and drive off to an airport in hopes of being able to find a working aeroplane to fly off with. The zombies, unshakable, still manage to track them down. Consequently, all of the survivors, except for Alison, Hunter, and Alison’s brother Ricky (Jason K. Wixom), are killed. Mustering their courage, they confront the zombies and begin shooting them. At last, only the giant zombie is left. Having run out of bullets, Hunter is impaled by the sharp-clawed zombie. Nonetheless, he miraculously finds the energy to detonate a grenade, wiping out the creature and destroying the rundown airport. Just as the bomb explodes, Alison and Ricky climb into a truck and drive off to safety. Alison vows to always remember Hunter and his courageous deed, echoing that he had finally found what he yearned for — peace. In the aftermath of the explosion, Hunter is shown to be still alive. He explains that he feels cursed as the zombies never seem to be able to kill him and decides to take his own life before the credits roll.If you enjoy the classic “B” Horror Flicks and the cheesy actors and lines then this movie is a Hoot. I personally loved the movie.

An NSA mission to collect information on Anarchy 99, a mercenary group of former Russian soldiers goes awry when the agent’s identity is discovered. Anarchy 99 has a biochemical weapon named “Silent Night,” missing since the fall of the Soviet Union, and NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons believes the only way to get close is to recruit an agent that would not have any ties to the United States government or any formal training that Anarchy 99 would recognise. He selects Xander Cage, also known as X, an extreme sports professional and host of his own television show, who was recently captured by the FBI for stealing and destroying a prominent California senator’s car as an act of protest. Gibbons puts Cage through two tests– stopping a staged diner robbery and escaping from a drug cartel’s plantation in Colombia during an army raid, each test seeing Cage demonstrate both his physical and psychological skills as he both defeats his foes and rapidly assesses the situation before him– and offers Cage the mission. Cage is convinced to accept the mission after Gibbons uses a carrot/stick technique, with a clean slate as the carrot and a prison sentence as the stick.Xander goes to Prague and meets with the NSA support team including Czech agent Milan Sova, who explains that Cage is only in Prague because Gibbons had put pressure on Sova and if he does anything wrong, he will be deported back to America. Cage flips this show of authority by saying that he doesn’t want to be there and pointing out that he’s never been under anyone’s jurisdiction. While scouting an Anarchy 99 party, Xander purposely reveals Sova’s cover, which allows him to gain the confidence of Anarchy 99’s leader, Yorgi. Through Yorgi’s brother Kolya, who is a fan of Cage’s show, Xander gains critical information on the military background of Anarchy 99’s members. Xander is attending a car deal with Yorgi at his invitation when Sova shows up and starts a firefight. Xander shoots Sova with a fake blood-splatter round to make it look like he is dead, which causes Yorgi to fully accept Xander as a member of Anarchy 99. Xander returns with Yorgi to their headquarters, a castle outside of the city, where he meets Yorgi’s girlfriend Yelena. Xander finds Yelena trying to break into Yorgi’s safe and, taking her to a nearby restaurant, tells her he is an American agent. Yelena gets a call from Kirill, a sniper working for Yorgi, who reveals they know of Xander’s true identity before he starts firing on them. Yelena and Cage work together to help each other escape by staging a fight between them, which results in Cage knocking Yelena out with a serving tray. Cage is then kidnapped by the NSA team and taken to Gibbons, who tells Xander to return home since his cover is blown, but Xander refuses as he fears for Yelena’s safety from both Yorgi and a planned attack on the castle by special forces. Xander learns that Sova purposely blew his cover.Xander sneaks back to the castle and overhears Yorgi’s plans to equip a waterborn drone named Ahab with “Silent Night” to release the biochemical in the middle of every major city, starting with Prague. Yorgi tests the weapon on his scientists, killing them. Xander rescues Yelena from Yorgi and kills Kolya. At a safehouse, Yelena explains she is an FSB agent, working undercover to get close to Yorgi two years ago, but six months after the start of the operation, her contacts abandoned her. Xander organises the rest of the NSA team in Prague for an assault on Yorgi’s castle. Xander himself jumps out of a plane and snowboards to a nearby monitoring station which Anarchy 99 uses to secure the castle and destroys it by starting an avalanche, but is captured by Yorgi’s forces. Xander is taken back to Yorgi, who reveals he has captured Yelena again and has known about her true identity all along. As the special forces attack starts, Xander and Yelena use the opportunity to escape, killing Kirill and Yorgi, who already launched Ahab towards the center of Prague. Xander alerts Gibbons, who has the Czech military prepare to destroy the Ahab via airstrikes with the unfortunate side effect of releasing some of the biochemical agent. Xander harpoons Ahab from the car, grabs the hard drive containing the priming and targeting information and flips one of the primed bio-warheads, causing the drone to sink underwater. Xander is rescued from the freezing river and Gibbons promises Yelena American citizenship. Xander and Yelena are relaxing in Bora Bora when Gibbons calls, telling him there is another mission. Xander ignores him and goes with Yelena.XXX is a good film, and is moderately entertaining, though considerably too long; trimmed to 95 minutes or so, it could have been an even more decent movie.
